'120 children' in The Independent, no number in RTÉ or ABC, on the same UN report

Three reports on one UN fact-finding mission. One says the United States "likely committed war crimes", one says the strike "amounts to war crime", one says the mission "believes" the US was behind it.

Anglosphere Iran United States

The finding. A UN-backed fact-finding mission said it had reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed the war crime of launching indiscriminate attacks in the 28 February strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school in Minab. All three reports we hold carry that conclusion; none disputes it.

The wording hardens through the day.

Outlet Published (UTC) How the finding is put A death toll?
RTÉ News 08:24 mission "had reasonable grounds to believe the United States was behind two military strikes" none
ABC News (Australia) 11:40 "US strike on Minab school amounts to war crime" none
The Independent 14:59 US "likely committed war crimes" with a "reckless" strike "more than 150", "around 120 schoolchildren", state media "168"

The numbers. Only The Independent counts, and it gives three figures, each attributed, none reconciled. It also writes that "no final public accounting of the incident has been released". No report we hold names a person killed at the school.

Scope. Only The Independent reports the mission also finding Iran committed crimes against humanity against its own protesters. ABC puts both in one sentence; RTÉ does not mention Iran's conduct.

Not settled. Who struck Lamerd. The Independent reports the mission calling that second 28 February strike indiscriminate and a war crime, and quotes US Central Command saying US forces launched no strikes into the city that day. No other report we hold mentions Lamerd. The toll at Minab is not settled either.

What this is about. A panel of independent experts reporting to the United Nations has blamed the United States for bombing an Iranian primary school, and the three reports we hold state that blame with three different degrees of firmness.

How it got here. The UN Human Rights Council — the body in Geneva where governments examine each other's rights records — set up the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran in 2022, after mass protests inside the country and the crackdown that followed. Such a mission investigates and publishes; it cannot arrest or prosecute anyone. Its remit was Iran's treatment of Iranians; this year it acquired a second subject. The Independent reports that a US-Israeli war on Iran began in February 2026, and that the school in Minab was struck on 28 February "soon after" it started, alongside a strike on a sports centre. The same report describes fresh anti-government protests that "erupted in late December" and were put down by Tehran's security forces. The mission's findings cover both.

Who is in it. The mission, chaired by the Bangladeshi jurist Sara Hossain. The United States: The Independent reports that in June President Donald Trump said "nobody" purposefully attacked a girls' school in Iran in February, that US Central Command denies striking Lamerd, and that the administration has not published a Pentagon inquiry into the bombing. Iran: Tehran, the same report says, blames the unrest on "terrorists and rioters" backed by foreign adversaries.

What is at stake. A finding, not a verdict. The mission asked both governments to stop, to pay reparations and to guarantee non-repetition, and asked other states to pursue accountability under universal jurisdiction — national courts elsewhere, because no UN court is waiting to take this.

Where it stands. The report goes to the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The Independent says neither the US nor the Iranian mission there answered its request for comment.

What is being argued about

  • How firmly the UN finding is stated — "believes", "amounts to", "likely committed"
  • Whether a death toll is given at all, and whose figures it is
  • Whether Iran's crackdown on its own protesters belongs in the same story
  • The disputed second strike, at Lamerd

The bias in this coverageBias

One report carries the numbers

Only the longest report gives any death toll, and it gives three — Iranian officials' 150-plus, around 120 schoolchildren, state media's 168 — each attributed, none reconciled. The two short reports name the finding and no figure. Nobody killed in the school is named in any report.

3 reports on the strike 1 reports giving any death toll 3 tolls in the one report that counts 0 reports naming a person killed

Same actor, three verbs

All three reports put the United States at the centre of the sentence, but the verb changes: "committed the war crime", "amounts to war crime", "was behind". The longest report carries a US denial on the second strike and notes both missions in Geneva did not reply. Iran's crackdown is written with the same construction — Tehran named as acting, Tehran's denial recorded.

3 reports naming the US as the actor 1 reports carrying a US denial or non-reply 1 reports carrying Tehran's denial

Claims and verdicts

true A UN-backed fact-finding mission found reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed a war crime in the 28 February strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school in Minab.
The Independent quotes the mission's finding directly, and RTÉ News and ABC News (Australia) both report the same conclusion; no report we hold contradicts it. All three rest on the same mission report, which is the document the claim is about.
