£72m in 24 hours: Reform says it "levels the playing field", the Independent says Farage still "won't win"
Two £36m donations in two days. The Guardian calls them jointly the largest ever made to a UK party; no report we hold names anyone calling for a cap.
The money. Christopher Harborne gave Reform UK £36m on Saturday, matching £36m from Ben Delo revealed the day before. The Guardian, The Independent and TheJournal.ie all carry both figures. No report we hold gives a different one. £72m in 24 hours.
The claim about it. The Guardian says the two sums are "jointly the largest donations made to a UK political party". Neither it nor The Independent names the previous record, so that comparison rests on the outlets' own assertion.
Where they part.
| Outlet | On what the £72m means |
|---|---|
| The Guardian, news | the sums "have intensified calls for restrictions" — nobody is named making them |
| The Guardian, analysis | "higher than the combined spending of every major party at the 2024 general election" |
| Reform, quoted by The Guardian | the money "levels the playing field" |
| The Independent, comment | the donations "still leave the party with a major problem" |
| TheJournal.ie | Harborne is "the party's biggest donor" |
Not settled. Whether £72m really beats every major party's 2024 election spending: only The Guardian's analysis makes that comparison, and it does not quote the figure it rests on. No report we hold quotes anyone by name asking for a limit on what one donor may give, though two say such calls have grown. Two of the six reports are labelled comment or analysis rather than news.
What this is about. One party, Reform UK, has received two gifts of £36m each in two days, and Britain has no limit on how much one person may give a party.
How it got here.
- 2000. The Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act set the current rules. Donors must be "permissible": broadly, people on a UK electoral register or companies that operate in the UK. Large gifts must be reported to the Electoral Commission, which publishes them. The Act caps what parties may spend during an election campaign. It does not cap what a donor may give.
- 2018–2021. Nigel Farage led the Brexit Party, founded to push through the UK's exit from the European Union. It renamed itself Reform UK in January 2021 and shifted its focus to immigration and the cost of living.
- July 2024. Labour won the general election and Keir Starmer became prime minister. Farage entered the Commons as MP for Clacton, along with a handful of Reform colleagues.
- 2025. Reform took control of several English councils in the May local elections and led many national polls.
- 11–12 September 2026. Ben Delo gave £36m. A day later Christopher Harborne matched it. The Guardian and The Independent both call the sums a record.
The actors.
- Reform UK. A young party with far less money than Labour or the Conservatives. It says the gifts "level the playing field", The Guardian reports.
- Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne. Both are cryptocurrency billionaires. TheJournal.ie calls Harborne "the party's biggest donor".
- The Electoral Commission. It records donations and enforces the spending caps. It cannot set a limit on donations. Only Parliament can do that.
What is at stake. Money pays for staff, data and advertising between elections, when spending is not capped. The Guardian's analysis argues it also carries a risk: voters may turn against a party they see as bought by billionaires. The wider question is whether one donor should be able to give this much at all.
Where it stands. The next general election must be held by August 2029. The law has not changed. The Guardian reports growing calls for limits on individual donors, but no report we hold names anyone making them or any bill to do so.
What is being argued about
- Whether two £36m gifts are the largest sums ever given to a UK political party
- Whether there should be a cap on what one person can give a party
- Whether £72m changes Reform UK's chances at an election
- Where the money came from, and what cryptocurrency wealth in politics buys
