A Jerusalem Post photo caption blames 'Houthi strikes'; Reuters and AFP name no cause for the fire at Riyadh airport
A fuel tank burned near Riyadh's main airport on Saturday, hours after Saudi Arabia issued air-raid alerts. Two news agencies saw the fire. No report we hold quotes a Saudi official on what caused it.
What is agreed. Black smoke and flames rose near King Khalid International Airport on Saturday. Reuters video, carried by Al-Monitor, showed flames "from behind what appeared to be fuel tanks". An AFP journalist, carried by Al-Monitor, saw firefighters at "a burnt out fuel tank emblazoned with the logo of the Saudi oil giant Aramco". Citing a flight-tracking website, AFP reported that flights were cancelled and delayed.
The alerts came first. Saudi authorities sent alerts for the capital overnight. France 24 and The Jerusalem Post say they were the first since the latest Houthi escalation. Asharq Al-Awsat reports that alerts in ten cities were lifted.
Where the accounts split:
| Outlet | What caused it | What burned |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | Photo caption says "Houthi strikes"; its text names no cause | fuel storage depot |
| Al-Monitor (Reuters) | "booms were heard"; no one named | what appeared to be fuel tanks |
| Al-Monitor (AFP), LBCI | no cause given | an Aramco fuel tank |
| France 24 | residents heard "loud booms" | an Aramco tank, "reportedly" |
| Shargh | drones, citing unnamed "Yemeni sources" | several depots of the Safari company |
What is not settled. Whether anything struck the airport at all. Who did it, if anyone: the reports we hold carry no Houthi claim and no Saudi statement on the cause. Whether the Aramco tank and Shargh's Safari depots are the same site. Whether anyone was hurt: no report says.
What this is about. A fire at a fuel installation next to Saudi Arabia's main airport, during a new confrontation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi movement.
How it got here. The Houthis, formally called Ansar Allah, are an armed movement from northern Yemen. In 2014 they seized the capital, Sanaa, and drove out the internationally recognised government. In March 2015 Saudi Arabia led a military coalition into Yemen to restore that government. For years the Houthis fired missiles and drones into Saudi Arabia, at airports, cities and oil sites. In September 2019 an attack hit Aramco's Abqaiq plant. The Houthis claimed it. The United States blamed Iran, and Iran denied it. A UN-brokered truce in April 2022 largely stopped the cross-border attacks, and Riyadh and the Houthis opened talks. After the Gaza war began in October 2023, the Houthis turned their fire on shipping in the Red Sea and on Israel.
This week the Houthis' military spokesperson said the group had foiled "criminal attempts" in Sanaa, blamed Saudi Arabia and vowed a response, according to The Jerusalem Post. The alerts for Riyadh came hours later.
The actors. The Houthis govern Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, and Iran backs them. Saudi Arabia backs the rival Yemeni government. Aramco is Saudi Arabia's state-controlled oil company.
What is at stake. If a strike on the capital's airport is confirmed, the calm since 2022 has broken down on Saudi soil. If the fire was an accident, it has not broken down yet.
Where it stands. The alerts have been lifted. Firefighters were working on the fire. No party in the reports we hold has said what caused it.
What is being argued about
- Whether a strike hit the airport, or residents only heard booms
- Whether an Aramco fuel tank burned, or Safari company depots
- The first air-raid alerts for Riyadh in this escalation
- Flight cancellations and delays at the airport
