A 'partial tactical flaw', says a Hezbollah MP; a 'catastrophe', say the party's Lebanese rivals
Hezbollah's leader and one of its MPs have defended the party's record in the war, and three rival politicians answered them on the same day. In the reports we hold, Hezbollah's words reach readers only through outlets that argue against it.
The dispute. Hezbollah has reviewed its war with Israel. Its opponents reject what the review concludes. Both sides are arguing about one question: was the damage a small mistake, or the result of the choices the party made?
| Who | What they said | Carried by |
|---|---|---|
| Mohammad Raad, head of Hezbollah's bloc in parliament | The losses and breaches were "no more than a partial tactical flaw" | An-Nahar (opinion column) |
| Naim Qassem, Hezbollah secretary-general | When holding a place gets too costly, fighters "withdraw to other places" | An-Nahar |
| Samir Geagea, Lebanese Forces | "Your resistance led to the opposite of what you claim" | LBCI |
| Geagea and Sami Gemayel, Kataeb | A "catastrophe", and weapons serving "Iranian aims" | Al-Modon (headline) |
| Fouad Makhzoumi, MP | Hezbollah took the state's decision and "mortgaged it to Iran" | LBCI |
The toll. An-Nahar's column says the war caused "more than 10,000" deaths. It does not say who counted them or what the figure includes. No other report we hold gives a figure.
Whose voice. Four of the six reports we hold lead with a rival's rebuttal, and LBCI ran its Geagea story twice. Only one report quotes Qassem directly, and it then argues against him. An-Nahar says people in the south were angered by Raad's words, but it names and quotes none of them. We hold no report from Al-Manar, Hezbollah's own channel.
Not settled. No second report carries Raad's exact words. An-Nahar suggests there may have been "an implicit indirect agreement" with Israel over the loss of Ali al-Taher hill. That is the column's own suggestion, and nothing we hold confirms it. We also cannot say why An-Nahar expects "hot weeks" in October.
What this is about. This is a fight among Lebanon's politicians over whether Hezbollah should keep its weapons, now that the party has reviewed a war that went badly for it.
How it got here. Hezbollah is a Shia Islamist party and armed movement. It was founded in the 1980s with backing from Iran. It sits in Lebanon's parliament and keeps a force outside the control of the Lebanese army. On 8 October 2023, the day after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel, Hezbollah began firing into Israel. It said it was acting in support of Gaza. The cross-border fighting grew into a full war in autumn 2024. Israel killed Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah's leader, in Beirut's southern suburbs in late September 2024. Weeks later it killed his expected successor, Hashem Safieddine. Naim Qassem became secretary-general. A ceasefire in November 2024 required Hezbollah to pull back from the border. The Lebanese army was to deploy in its place. In 2025 Lebanon elected a new president, Joseph Aoun, the former army chief. His government set the goal of bringing all weapons under the state. An-Nahar's reports describe fighting since then: villages occupied, positions lost, and talks with Israel under pressure.
The actors. Hezbollah and its MPs defend the decision to open the front in 2023. The Lebanese Forces, led by Samir Geagea, and the Kataeb, led by Sami Gemayel, are mainly Christian parties that have long opposed Hezbollah's weapons. Fouad Makhzoumi is a Beirut MP who takes the same position. Iran is Hezbollah's main backer. Israel is the party on the other side of the war.
What is at stake. The question is whether Lebanon's state will hold the only army in the country. It is also whether Lebanon's fate stays tied to Iran's confrontation with the United States and Israel. The UN peacekeeping force in the south, UNIFIL, is due to end its mission, so who controls the border will matter more.
Where it stands. Qassem has called for talks. According to An-Nahar, he has set conditions the government would have to meet first, including reversing its decisions.
What is being argued about
- Whether Hezbollah's losses were a small tactical error or the result of its strategy
- Whether Hezbollah's weapons serve Lebanon or Iran
- A death toll that one report gives with no source
- The terms Qassem has set for talks with the government
