A Trump win that 'secures Washington's core goals', says a Washington Examiner column; sovereignty not weakened, say Denmark and Greenland in Shargh
The United States, Denmark and Greenland have a security deal on the island. A Washington Examiner opinion column calls it a Trump victory aimed at China. Shargh reports only that Copenhagen and Nuuk say Greenland's sovereignty stays intact. The text has not been published.
What we hold. Two reports, both filed on 19 September: an opinion column in the Washington Examiner (English, US) and a one-line news report in Shargh (Persian, Iran). We hold no Danish or Greenlandic report.
Where they split.
| Washington Examiner (opinion) | Shargh | |
|---|---|---|
| Who won | Trump: the pact "secures Washington's core goals" | Not addressed |
| Sovereignty | Protected, "based on preliminary announcements" | Denmark and Greenland say it is not weakened |
| US rights | Permanent overflight and basing, a veto on non-allied investment | Not reported |
| China | The deal "blocks" Beijing's footholds | Not mentioned |
| Signing | At the UN General Assembly next week | No date or place |
What both carry. Both say Copenhagen and Nuuk back the deal. The Washington Examiner relays that through Politico. Neither quotes a Greenlander directly.
The column's own caveat. It says the text "has not yet been publicly released". It says sources call claims of permanent control an overstatement of "the daily military reality". It then states the investment ban and basing rights as fact.
What is not settled. - The terms. No report we hold quotes the text. - The signing. Only the column gives a date and place. - Approval. The column says lawmakers in Nuuk and Copenhagen must still review it. - Whether a US veto on investment exists at all. One report says so, and it is an opinion piece.
What this is about. A security agreement between the United States, Denmark and Greenland, the Arctic island that Donald Trump has said the US should own.
How it got here. Greenland was a Danish colony. It gained home rule in 1979 and wider self-government in 2009. The 2009 law recognises that Greenlanders may choose independence. Denmark still runs its defence and foreign policy.
The US has had a military presence on the island since the Second World War. A 1951 defence agreement with Denmark lets it keep a base in the far north-west, now called Pituffik Space Base. It sits on the shortest route for missiles between Russia and North America.
Washington has tried to buy the island before. Harry Truman offered in 1946. Trump raised a purchase in 2019, in his first term. Denmark and Greenland refused. According to the Washington Examiner, he renewed the demand earlier this year. The talks that followed produced this pact.
Who is in it, and why. - The United States wants military access and to keep rivals out of the Arctic. - Denmark, a founding member of NATO, is responsible for Greenland's defence and wants to keep the Kingdom whole. Its prime minister is Mette Frederiksen. - Greenland runs most of its own affairs under Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen. It wants a say in its own future. - China and Russia are not parties. China calls itself a "Near-Arctic State". The Washington Examiner says Russia has spent a decade rebuilding its Arctic forces.
What is at stake. Greenland holds rare earths and other critical minerals. Melting ice is opening Arctic shipping routes. Who may base troops there, and who may invest there, shapes both.
Where it stands. The three governments have agreed a deal. Its text is unpublished. Lawmakers in Nuuk and Copenhagen still have to review it.
What is being argued about
- Whether the pact is a US win or a deal that keeps Greenland's sovereignty
- Terms stated by one column but not published: overflight, basing, an investment veto
- Whether the deal is aimed at China
- Where and when it will be signed
