ABC News (Australia) says the White House 'reinstated' CNN, MS NOW and Politico. Its own headline, and every other report, says they were barred
A federal judge ordered the White House to restore the three outlets' access at about 1 a.m. on Thursday. The New York Times, the Guardian, The Independent and Reuters all say the outlets' reporters were turned away later that morning. Der Standard says entry was refused 'initially'. One ABC News (Australia) report says two opposite things. Its headline says the reporters are still barred, and its first line says they have been reinstated.
What most reports say. A federal court ordered President Trump to reverse his ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico around 1 a.m. Thursday, the New York Times reports. It says "none were granted entry later that morning." A court filing by the outlets, quoted by the Guardian, says reporters from all three "were turned away" and that Secret Service agents confiscated their hard passes.
Where the accounts split.
| Outlet | What it says | Barred? |
|---|---|---|
| The New York Times | "none were granted entry" | Yes, stated flat |
| The Guardian | "turned away", quoting the filing; defiance of the order is "apparent" | Yes |
| The Independent | White House "denies access" | Yes |
| Reuters (HotNews.ro and LBCI repeat it) | "barred"; outlets seek a hearing | Yes |
| Der Standard | entry refused "zunächst", meaning initially | At first |
| ABC News (Australia) | headline: "still barred"; first line: "reinstated" | Both |
Who stood at the door. Only the filing, as the Guardian quotes it, names who: Secret Service agents. Three headlines name the White House. The New York Times names no one at the gate.
Vance. Only The Jerusalem Post says Vice President JD Vance was "allegedly" the official behind the Politico report that led to the ban. It does not say who makes that allegation.
Not settled. We do not know whether the reporters got in later on Thursday. Der Standard's "initially" and ABC's "reinstated" suggest they may have. No report we hold says when or how. We also hold no White House explanation for turning them away.
This story is about whether the White House obeyed a court order to let three news organisations back into the building.
How it got here. Reporters who cover the US president work inside the White House. Regular correspondents carry a "hard pass", a permanent credential that gets them through the gates. The Secret Service guards the building and controls who enters. A smaller, rotating "pool" of reporters follows the president where the full press corps cannot fit. There is precedent for a fight like this. In 2025 the White House cut the Associated Press out of the pool because the agency kept using the name "Gulf of Mexico", and the AP went to court.
This time President Donald Trump banned three outlets outright: CNN, MS NOW (the channel formerly called MSNBC) and Politico. According to the reports we hold, the White House justified the ban by pointing to a Politico report. None of them says what that report contained. The outlets sued. They argued that the ban breaches the First Amendment, which protects the press from government, and the Fifth Amendment, which guarantees due process. On Wednesday night a federal judge found the ban likely unconstitutional and ordered access restored immediately. Der Standard reports that the ban was suspended for 14 days.
The actors. - The White House decides who gets press access. - The Secret Service staffs the gates. - CNN, MS NOW and Politico are the three barred outlets and the plaintiffs. - The federal court issued the order, which binds the administration.
What is at stake. The case tests whether a government can choose which reporters get close to the president. It also tests whether a court order on that question is obeyed on the morning it takes effect. If the refusal stands, the order means little in practice. If the court enforces it, the ban is on hold while the case continues.
Where it stands. On Thursday the outlets asked for an emergency hearing. Whether any of their reporters got in later that day is not settled in anything we hold.
What is being argued about
- Whether the three outlets were kept out on Thursday or let back in
- Who turned the reporters away: the White House, or the Secret Service agents named in the court filing
- Whether the refusal defied the judge's order, which the Guardian calls 'apparent' defiance
- Whether JD Vance was the official behind the Politico report cited for the ban
