ABC News says one dead and 140 missing, RTÉ says six dead and 130
Four reports on one capsizing in the Java Sea give four sets of numbers. The gap is five hours of publication, not a conflict of accounts — but none of the four says what its figure counts.
Four reports, four sets of numbers. All four cover the same ferry capsizing in the Java Sea on Sunday. None says what its figure counts or the hour at which it was taken.
| Outlet | Dead | Missing | Aboard | Rescued | Whose figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ABC News (Australia) | 1 | 140 | 243 | — | no source named |
| RTÉ News | at least six | 130 | — | — | "Rescuers in Indonesia said" |
| TheJournal.ie | 6 | 130 | — | — | no source named |
| CBC News | at least six | about 130 | — | 107 | "rescuers said" |
The gap is the clock. ABC News published at 05:46 GMT, five hours before RTÉ News and nearly seven before CBC News. Its lower toll and higher missing count are an earlier hour of the same count, not a rival account.
One number makes the others readable. Only ABC News says 243 people were aboard, and only ABC News gives the route, Surabaya to Banjarmasin. In the other three, a reader has a missing figure with nothing to measure it against. Only CBC News counts the rescued.
What is not settled. The 107 rescued appears in one report and nowhere else; so does the total of 243 aboard. No report we hold names a single passenger — dead, rescued or missing — and none names the ship's operator. In all four, the weather is the only actor named.
What this is about. A passenger ferry crossing between two Indonesian islands overturned in bad weather in the Java Sea in mid-September 2026, and the reports that reached readers in Australia, Ireland and Canada do not agree on how many people died and how many are still unaccounted for.
How it got here. Indonesia is an archipelago state: its provinces are separated by water, and ferries are ordinary public transport there, carrying people, vehicles and freight on scheduled routes rather than tourists on excursions. The Java Sea lies between Java, the country's most populous island and the site of the port of Surabaya, and Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo, where Banjarmasin is the main port of South Kalimantan. There is no road between the two. ABC News (Australia) is the only report we hold that names the route the ship was on, Surabaya to Banjarmasin. Counts in a sea accident are provisional by nature: the starting point is the passenger list, survivors are subtracted as they are landed and the dead are added as bodies are recovered, so a figure carries the hour it was taken.
Who is in it. Search and rescue in Indonesian waters is the responsibility of the national search and rescue agency, Basarnas, working with the navy and local authorities; no report we hold names the agency, the ship or its operator. CBC News photographed relatives at the rescuers' command centre in Banjarmasin, reading a passenger list for their families' names.
What is at stake. Whether the people listed as missing are found alive, and how long a search can continue in the sea conditions rescuers described.
Where it stands. The last report we hold was published on Sunday 13 September 2026, shortly after midday GMT. The search was still under way and about 130 people were missing. We hold nothing later than that.
What is being argued about
- How many died and how many are missing after a ferry capsized in the Java Sea
- Whether the four death tolls conflict or simply stop at different hours
- What the missing figure counts, and how many people were aboard
- Who is named as the source of the numbers, and who is named at all
