Al Jazeera says Hormuz has been closed for six months. CentCom says 18 million barrels crossed on Tuesday.
The US military counted 40 escorted vessels and about 18 million barrels through the Strait of Hormuz on 1 September. Al Jazeera, which reports the strait has been closed for six months, puts the ship trackers' count for that day at 11. And one Trump sentence about mines reaches readers three ways across five reports.
The count. Gulf News reports the US escorted "up to 40 commercial vessels carrying about 18 million barrels of oil" through Hormuz on Tuesday 1 September — CentCom and two US officials, via CNN. Al Jazeera carries the figure, then puts the ship trackers beside it.
| Who counted | When | Count | Counting what |
|---|---|---|---|
| CentCom, two US officials | Tue 1 Sep | 40 ships · 18m barrels | not stated |
| Kpler | Tue 1 Sep | 11 vessels | small, non-cargo craft excluded |
| Lloyd's List | 26 Aug–1 Sep | about 12 a day | cargo ships over 10,000 dwt |
| PortWatch | since March | 7 a day | not stated |
The closure. Al Jazeera writes in its own voice that the strait "has been closed since the US-Israel war on Iran began six months ago" — then counts five to 13 transits a day and quotes Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf: "the enemy managed to get some ships" through.
The mines. LBCI states Trump's line flat: "no mines at all". An-Nahar's round-up affirms it; An-Nahar's own report of the same remarks marks it زعم, claimed. Al Jazeera sets it against the 1 September JMIC advisory keeping Hormuz at "severe" for "drifting or uncharted mines".
Not settled. No report asks what the US count of 40 includes, and neither official is named. None carries an Iranian figure. Our two bias readings split on the mine line — four reports carrying it, or three — over whether Al Jazeera's "despite US claims to have cleared the strait of mines" counts.
What this is about: who controls the Strait of Hormuz, the sea lane between Iran and Oman, six months into a war between the United States and Iran.
How it got here
- Why the strait matters. Hormuz is the only sea route out of the Persian Gulf. Gulf News, citing the US Energy Information Administration, puts 2024 traffic at 20 million barrels of oil a day. That is about a fifth of world consumption, and most of it goes to China, India, Japan and South Korea. Iran sits on the strait's northern shore and has long threatened to close it if attacked.
- The nuclear dispute. For two decades the US and Israel have accused Iran of seeking a nuclear weapon. Iran denies it. A 2015 deal limited Iran's programme in return for sanctions relief. The US left the deal in 2018 and brought sanctions back.
- Escalation. After the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza that followed, Israel and Iran struck each other directly in 2024. In June 2025 Israel bombed Iranian nuclear and military sites, and the US struck Iran's nuclear facilities.
- The war. Open war between the US, Israel and Iran began about six months ago, the reports say. Who is to blame is disputed, and we do not settle it here.
The actors
- The United States escorts ships through the strait. It also blockades Iranian ports to cut off Iran's oil income.
- Iran says the strait is closed except to vessels it has approved. It warns that other ships may be targeted.
- Gulf producers. Saudi Arabia and the UAE can pipe some crude around the strait, Gulf News reports, but far less than normally sails through it.
- Ship trackers and insurers count what moves. Their numbers decide what shipping lines will risk.
What is at stake
If traffic recovers, oil reaches Asia and prices ease. If it stays low, war-risk insurance and tanker charter costs stay high. Gulf News reports charters above $500,000 a day. Both governments also gain from being seen to control the strait.
Where it stands
Before the war, about 100 ships a day crossed. Every count we hold is far below that. The counts disagree on how far below.
What is being argued about
- Is the strait open at all? Al Jazeera says closed for six months, and counts five to 13 transits a day in the same report.
- What does the US count of 40 include? Drewry and Lloyd's List say an operational count may take in tugs, dhows and naval auxiliaries — no report we hold put that to CentCom.
- Are the mines cleared? Trump and CentCom's Brad Cooper say yes; the 1 September JMIC advisory still cites 'drifting or uncharted mines' and the IRGC says two tankers hit them.
- Whose numbers are missing? No report carries an Iranian barrel or transit figure, and neither of the two US officials is named anywhere.
