Al Jazeera says Israel is dismantling Palestinian collective life in the West Bank; the Jerusalem Post says a new community on "Israel's eastern border"
Three reports, one territory, one day, and none of the three acknowledges the other two. We hold no Israeli answer to the rights group and no Palestinian account of the new village.
Three reports, one day, one territory. Al Jazeera, reporting the Israeli rights group B'Tselem, says Israel is working to eliminate Palestinian presence from the West Bank, and sets out five mechanisms it says Israel uses to dismantle Palestinian collective life. The Jerusalem Post reports a new agricultural moshav, Bitron, inaugurated in the Jordan Valley with Hashomer Hachadash. Palestine TV reports settlers releasing livestock between residents' homes in Sinjil, north of Ramallah, on Monday evening, sourced to eyewitnesses.
The word for the land is the disagreement.
| Outlet | What it reports | What it calls the place |
|---|---|---|
| Al Jazeera English | Israel dismantling Palestinian collective life, attributed to B'Tselem | the West Bank |
| The Jerusalem Post | Bitron inaugurated, part of the "Otef Israel" initiative | "communities along Israel's eastern border" |
| Palestine TV | settlers' livestock driven among houses | "the village of Sinjil, north of Ramallah" |
One report carries both words. The Jerusalem Post calls Bitron a community. The man it quotes, Hashomer Hachadash founder Yoel Zilberman, says: "We will establish more settlements along Israel's eastern corridor and strengthen existing ones."
Not settled. We hold a single report on each of the three. No Israeli official answer to B'Tselem. No army or settler response on Sinjil. No Palestinian outlet we hold reports Bitron, and nothing we hold gives the status of the land it sits on. Sinjil is named in no Israeli or Qatari report we hold.
What this is about: who controls the land of the West Bank, and whether Palestinians or Israeli settlers will live on it.
How it got here. - 1967. Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the Six-Day War. It has held it under military occupation since. It annexed East Jerusalem. It has not annexed the rest. - Since the 1970s. Israeli governments have built settlements, and settlers have founded outposts. Israeli civilians now live among Palestinian towns and villages. The International Court of Justice and most governments hold that the settlements break international law. Israel disputes that. - 1993–1995. The Oslo Accords created the Palestinian Authority and divided the West Bank into zones. The Authority runs Palestinian cities such as Ramallah. Israel kept full control of the largest zone, which includes most of the Jordan Valley. The deal was meant to be temporary, pending a final agreement. No final agreement was ever reached. - July 2024. The ICJ gave an advisory opinion that the occupation is unlawful. Israel rejected it. - Since October 2023. The war in Gaza followed the Hamas-led attack on Israel of 7 October 2023. UN agencies and rights groups say settler violence and settlement building in the West Bank have risen since then. Israeli officials frame the building as security and national right.
The actors. - B'Tselem is an Israeli human rights group. It documents Israeli rule over Palestinians. - Hashomer Hachadash is an Israeli organisation that supports farmers and builds communities. - Palestine TV is the Palestinian Authority's official broadcaster. - The Jordan Valley runs along the border with Jordan. Israeli governments have long said Israel must keep it for security. Palestinians count it as part of a future state.
What is at stake. Each new settlement makes it harder to draw a Palestinian state on the map. Supporters of settlement want exactly that. Opponents say it is the reason a state cannot be drawn. What each side calls the land is part of the argument: "Israel's eastern border" or occupied West Bank.
Where it stands. There are no peace talks. The Palestinian Authority governs only parts of the territory. Building and displacement continue side by side.
What is being argued about
- What the same West Bank ground is called: a place being emptied, or a border to be filled
- B'Tselem's five mechanisms, and the absence of any Israeli reply to them
- A new Jordan Valley village, and a promise of more from the group that helped build it
- Settlers' livestock in Sinjil, reported only by the Palestinian broadcaster
