Algiers cites “provocative and hostile actions”; the UAE’s Gargash says ties must not be “hostage to internal tensions”
Six reports on the break, published within sixteen minutes of each other. Five are written from Algeria’s statement, one carries the Emirati reply, and one puts a clock on the ambassador that no other mentions.
The break. Algeria’s foreign ministry said on Thursday it was cutting diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates. The Independent quotes the statement — “Having exhausted all the ways for preserving the bilateral relations” — as carried by the official APS agency and read out on public television. Six reports we hold say the break happened. None names an act behind it.
Done, or about to be done.
| Report | How it puts it | Reason carried |
|---|---|---|
| RT | ties “severed”, ambassador given 48 hours | none |
| TASS | Algeria “to cut” ties | “in response to hostile actions” |
| The Independent | “severing” | alleged “provocative and hostile actions” |
| Asharq Al-Awsat | “severs” | headline only |
| Observador | “breaks relations” | why Algiers waited |
| Shargh | the UAE answering it | Gargash on “internal tensions” |
One answer, from Tehran. Shargh is the only report we hold in which the other capital speaks: Anwar Gargash, adviser to the Emirati president, saying relations must be run with “reason and clarity of interest” and not held “hostage to internal tensions”. No report carrying Algeria’s account answers that charge.
Not settled. The 48 hours: RT alone gives a deadline, and The Independent, which quotes the statement at length, gives none. The grievance: no report names an incident or a date. And no report we hold says what the break means for flights, trade or the people holding visas in either country.
What this is about. Algeria, the largest country in Africa, has cut diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, a small, wealthy Gulf state. The two sit on opposite sides of several disputes in North Africa and beyond.
How it got here.
- Western Sahara. Morocco controls most of this former Spanish territory. Algeria backs the Polisario Front, which seeks independence for it. Algeria cut relations with Morocco in August 2021.
- 2020. The UAE opened a consulate in Laayoune, in the part of Western Sahara Morocco holds. That was read as support for Morocco's claim. The same year the UAE set up relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords. Morocco followed in December 2020, and the United States recognised Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in return. Observador says Algerian media have been critical of Abu Dhabi over these steps.
- The years since. Algeria has sided with the Polisario and with Palestine. The UAE has built ties with Morocco and Israel and taken sides in wars in Libya and Sudan, where critics accuse it of backing armed groups. The UAE rejects those charges. Observador says Algiers has for several years accused Abu Dhabi of interfering in its affairs.
The actors.
- Algeria: President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in office since December 2019. Observador quotes him on television calling the UAE a "tiny state" and saying that "wherever they set foot, blood flows". He said Algeria had held off a break only to avoid deepening divisions between Arab states.
- The UAE: ruled by President Mohamed bin Zayed. Anwar Gargash, his diplomatic adviser, gave the first Emirati reply.
- Morocco: not a party to this break, but it is the UAE's close partner in the dispute Algeria cares most about.
What is at stake. The break hardens a split across North Africa and the Arab world, with Algeria on one side and Morocco and the UAE on the other. That split runs through Western Sahara, relations with Israel and the wars in Libya and Sudan. Tebboune's own reason for waiting was the unity of the Arab League. That unity is now under more strain.
Where it stands. Algeria announced the break on Thursday 10 September 2026. RT reports that the Emirati ambassador was given 48 hours. Algeria's statement names no specific incident. No report we hold says what happens to flights, trade or residents.
What is being argued about
- Whether the break is done or announced, and on what deadline
- Why Algiers says it acted, and why it says it waited
- The single Emirati reply, and who is quoted giving it
- What none of the reports names: an incident, a date, or the consequences
