Arutz Sheva puts the wounded man in his 40s, then at about 35; the Jerusalem Post says the car hit a patrol with an officer and a soldier inside
A driver rammed a vehicle at the Maccabim checkpoint near Modi'in on Wednesday. Within 12 minutes one outlet gave two ages for the one seriously wounded man. Neither outlet names the driver. According to the army, Israeli forces killed him at the scene.
What happened. A car rammed a vehicle at the Maccabim checkpoint near Modi'in on 23 September, Arutz Sheva and the Jerusalem Post report. Both say one man was seriously wounded. Arutz Sheva reports that the IDF said security forces at the scene killed the driver.
Who was hit. Each report describes him differently.
| Report | Who was hit | Source given |
|---|---|---|
| Arutz Sheva, 14:08 UTC | "Man in 40s severely wounded" | none |
| Arutz Sheva, 14:20 UTC | "a man approximately 35 years old", "serious and unstable" | United Hatzalah paramedics |
| Arutz Sheva, 14:26 UTC | "a police officer" | none |
| Jerusalem Post, 17:08 UTC | a patrol car with "an officer and a soldier" inside; "at least one" seriously wounded | Israel Police |
The driver. Both outlets call him "the terrorist". Arutz Sheva uses the army's word, "eliminated". The Jerusalem Post headline says "terrorist killed" but does not say who killed him. Neither outlet gives his name, his age or where he came from. Neither carries any Palestinian account.
Not settled. - The wounded man's age: in his 40s or about 35. - Whether the soldier in the patrol car was hurt. Neither outlet says. - The wounded man's name. The Jerusalem Post captions a photograph "Neria Leiter", but its text never says who that is. - Who the driver was, and how he was killed. - All six reports we hold come from two Israeli outlets, in English.
What this is about. A driver rammed an Israeli police patrol at a checkpoint on the edge of the occupied West Bank, and Israeli forces killed him.
How it got here. Israel captured the West Bank from Jordan in the war of June 1967. It has held it under military occupation since then. Palestinians want it as the core of a future state. Most governments and international bodies regard Israeli settlements there as illegal under international law, and Israel disputes that. Israel calls the area Judea and Samaria, which is why its police district there carries that name.
The Oslo Accords of 1993 and 1995 split the West Bank into zones. The Palestinian Authority runs the main cities. Israel keeps full control of most of the land and all of the crossings. Checkpoints like Maccabim control who moves between the West Bank and Israel. Maccabim sits on Highway 443, a road that runs from near Modi'in towards Jerusalem and crosses West Bank land on the way.
Car-ramming has been a recurring form of attack on Israeli soldiers, police and civilians for more than a decade. Violence in the West Bank rose sharply after the Hamas-led attack on Israel of 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza that followed.
The actors. The Israeli police and army run joint patrols in the West Bank. That is why, according to Israel Police, an officer and a soldier were in the car that was hit. United Hatzalah is a volunteer Israeli emergency medical service. No report we hold names the driver.
What is at stake. Attacks at crossings are often followed by tighter Israeli restrictions on Palestinian movement. They also feed Israel's argument over security in the West Bank.
Where it stands. One man is in hospital in serious condition. The driver is dead. We hold no report from a Palestinian outlet on the attack.
What is being argued about
- How old the one seriously wounded man is
- Whether a soldier was also in the car that was hit
- 'Eliminated' against 'killed' for the driver's death
- Why the driver is never named
