Arutz Sheva says "two terrorists from Shechem"; JNS says "Palestinian pair charged" — one indictment, three accounts
Two Palestinians have been indicted over a plot to assassinate Israel's national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir. Three Israeli reports carry the case. They disagree on what to call the accused, what to call the city they come from, and how the plot was meant to work. Neither accused man is named in any of them.
The case. Israel's internal security service, the Shin Bet, says it uncovered a plan to kill National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Two Palestinians have been indicted. Three reports — all Israeli — carry it, and all three rest on the same charge sheet and the same service.
Three accounts of one indictment.
| Report | What it calls the accused | The city | Method given |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arutz Sheva | "Two terrorists from Shechem" | Shechem | none; adds a plan to "kidnap IDF soldier" |
| The Jerusalem Post | "two Palestinians" | Nablus | none; weapons and recruiting "from late 2023" |
| JNS | "Palestinian pair charged with plot" | not named | "an explosive drone, according to the indictment" |
Nablus and Shechem are the same city. One report uses the Arabic name, one the Hebrew name, one names no city at all. No report gives both.
Who is hedged and who is not. JNS and the Jerusalem Post attach the plan to the indictment inside the sentence — "according to the indictment". Arutz Sheva's headline presents it as a disclosure and calls the two men terrorists before trial. The Jerusalem Post carries the charge sheet's other claims plainly but puts one word in quotation marks: the two worked to advance "military" activity.
Not settled. Whether a drone was part of the plan: only JNS says so. Whether a soldier was to be kidnapped: only Arutz Sheva says so. Neither report contradicts the other. The two accused are named in none of the three, and none carries a word from them, a defence lawyer, a family or a Palestinian official. No Palestinian outlet in our sweep carries the case at all.
What this is about. An Israeli charge sheet accusing two Palestinians of planning to murder a serving Israeli cabinet minister, filed while that minister is standing for re-election.
How it got here. The West Bank, including Nablus, has been under Israeli military occupation since the 1967 war. Nablus is the city's Arabic name; Shechem is the Hebrew name, used by Israelis who regard the territory as part of the Land of Israel. Which name a report uses is itself a position. Under the Oslo accords of the 1990s the Palestinian Authority was given limited administration over parts of the territory, but Israel retained overall security control, and its forces operate throughout. The Shin Bet is Israel's internal security service; the West Bank is within its remit, and cases it builds against Palestinians there end in Israeli courts. The Jerusalem Post dates the conduct alleged in this indictment to late 2023 — the period in which the Gaza war began and West Bank raids intensified.
The actors. Itamar Ben-Gvir is Israel's national security minister, the cabinet post that holds the police, and leader of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party. He is among the most polarising figures in Israeli politics and is under permanent protection. The two accused are identified in our reports only as Palestinians; not one of the three names either man.
What is at stake. An election. The photograph the Jerusalem Post runs shows Ben-Gvir at a supporters' conference in Petah Tikva on 16 August 2026, ahead of a general election. A plot against a candidate lands in the middle of that campaign, and how it is described — terrorists, or two men charged — is part of the campaign's language.
Where it stands. An indictment has been filed. The reports we hold do not say which court will hear it, when, or what the accused say in answer.
What is being argued about
- An indictment against two Palestinians over an alleged plot to assassinate Itamar Ben-Gvir
- Nablus or Shechem: two names for one city, and what each report chose
- Terrorists, Palestinians or a charged pair: how the accused are described before trial
- What every report leaves out — the accused men's names and any reply from their side
