Badenoch calls it 'Britannia Shield' and says 'we haven't called it an Iron Dome'; The Critic says her party's own release did
On the third day of the Conservative conference in Birmingham, Kemi Badenoch pledged £10bn for missile defence, ruled out a coalition with Reform UK and called the hall 'buzzing'. Three outlets covered it in three different tones, and they do not agree on what to call the shield.
The pledge. Badenoch pledged £10bn for a missile defence system, the Independent reports. The party calls it "Britannia Shield". The Independent's headline calls it a British "iron dome".
The name. Badenoch told Times Radio "We haven't called it an Iron Dome", The Critic reports. The same sketch says a Tory press release on Monday evening called it "A British Iron Dome". It says she later tweeted "A British 'Iron Dome'-style system". The Critic is the only report we hold that describes the release or the tweet.
| Outlet | What it calls the system |
|---|---|
| The Independent | British "iron dome" |
| TheJournal.ie | "Britannia Shield", essentially "a British Iron Dome" |
| The Critic | "Britannia Shield"; says the "Iron Dome" comparison came from the party |
Reform. Badenoch told the BBC "we would have another election if there was no overall majority", the Independent reports. She told GB News that Reform MPs who left her party would not be let back. The Critic quotes her saying Reform are "just not our kind of people".
The hall. Jeremy Clarkson joked that "a lot of people have come dressed as seats". Badenoch said "This conference is buzzing" and "We have many more people than last year".
Not settled. No report gives an attendance figure. No report says how many units the shield would have or what area it would cover. We hold no reply from Reform to her charges against its leaders in Wales.
What this is about. The leader of Britain's main opposition party used her annual conference to set out how she would fight the next general election, and against whom.
How it got here. The Conservatives governed the United Kingdom from 2010 to July 2024. At the general election that month they lost to Labour, which won a large majority. The Independent calls it the party's worst ever defeat. Kemi Badenoch was elected Conservative leader in November 2024, which made her Leader of the Opposition. Since then Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, has drawn voters from the Conservatives' right, and some of its MPs. The Independent reports the Conservatives now sit third in the polls, behind Labour and Reform.
Why a coalition question. In a hung parliament no party has a majority of seats in the House of Commons. A government then needs a deal with another party, or a fresh election. With three parties competing for first place, that has become a live question. Badenoch's answer is a second election rather than a deal with Reform.
Why missile defence. The parties compete over defence spending. Britain has no national shield against missiles. Israel's Iron Dome is the best-known system of its kind. TheJournal.ie notes it shoots down short-range rockets fired from up to 70km. Comparing a British plan with it is a promise of protection. Whether the party made that comparison is now disputed.
What is at stake. If the Conservatives cannot win voters back from Reform, the right of British politics stays split. That shapes who governs after the next election, which must be held by 2029.
Where it stands. The conference was still running in Birmingham on Tuesday 6 October. The shield has not been designed. The reports we hold give no costing beyond the £10bn figure.
What is being argued about
- Whether 'Britannia Shield' is a British 'Iron Dome', and who first said so
- Ruling out a coalition with Reform UK in a hung parliament
- MPs who defect told they will not be allowed back
- Empty seats in the main hall
