‘Blood of my son on his hands’ or ‘no Hamas rule in Gaza’: three outlets lead Netanyahu’s 7 October speech three ways
At Israel’s state memorial for the victims of 7 October, a bereaved father interrupted the prime minister. Two Israeli outlets led with him. A Saudi-owned paper led with a pledge on Gaza that we cannot confirm from any text we hold.
What happened. On 5 October 2026 Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at the state memorial ceremony at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem for civilians killed on 7 October 2023. The Jerusalem Post and Arutz Sheva report that the father of Tom Godo interrupted him. Arutz Sheva says he accused Netanyahu of “failing October 7 victims”.
Four headlines, three stories.
| Outlet | Leads with | Mentions the father? |
|---|---|---|
| Arutz Sheva | “You didn’t protect my son” | Yes |
| The Jerusalem Post | “Blood of my son on his hands” | Yes |
| Asharq Al-Awsat | “Will Be No Hamas Rule in Gaza” | Not in its headline |
| The Jerusalem Post (video) | “Israel honors October 7 victims, heroes” | Not in its headline |
How Tom Godo died. Both Israeli outlets say Israeli forces killed him, not Hamas. The Jerusalem Post cites the broadcaster KAN. It says the army told his family in 2025 that “Israeli fire was responsible”. Arutz Sheva says he was “killed by friendly fire” and does not say whose.
What is not settled. - Whether Netanyahu said there will be no Hamas rule in Gaza. Only Asharq Al-Awsat’s headline carries it, and we hold no text from that report. - What else the father said, and how Netanyahu responded. No report we hold says. - Whether Asharq Al-Awsat mentioned the interruption below its headline. We could not read that part.
What this is about. Israel held its state memorial for the civilians killed in the attack of 7 October 2023. A father whose son died that day interrupted the prime minister.
How it got here. On 7 October 2023 Hamas-led fighters crossed from Gaza into southern Israel. They attacked towns, kibbutzim and a music festival and took hostages back into Gaza. It was the deadliest day in Israel’s history. Israel answered with a war in Gaza that has run for most of the three years since. Hamas had governed Gaza since 2007. A ceasefire under a US-brokered plan took effect in October 2025. That plan said Hamas would not govern Gaza afterwards.
Inside Israel, 7 October became a fight about blame. The army and the security services failed to stop the attack. Bereaved families and opposition parties have demanded a state commission of inquiry. Netanyahu has led the government since late 2022, and for most of the years before that. He has rejected that form of inquiry and said responsibility would be examined after the war.
In the chaos of that day, Israel’s own forces killed some Israelis. The Jerusalem Post reports that Tom Godo was one of them, and that the army told his family so in 2025.
The actors. - Benjamin Netanyahu, who led the country on 7 October and leads it still. - The bereaved families, some of whom hold the government responsible for the failures. - Hamas, whose future role in Gaza is the open question in any settlement.
What is at stake. Who answers for 7 October shapes Israeli politics. Who governs Gaza decides whether the ceasefire becomes a settlement.
Where it stands. The reports we hold cover the ceremony only. They do not say where an inquiry or the talks on Gaza stand today.
What is being argued about
- A bereaved father interrupted Netanyahu at the state 7 October memorial
- The army told Tom Godo’s family in 2025 that Israeli fire killed him
- Asharq Al-Awsat’s headline: Netanyahu said there will be no Hamas rule in Gaza
- Which moment of the ceremony each outlet chose to lead with
