Burnham sees Iran's hand at RAF Fairford: an Independent headline says 'bomb plot', the AP copy it carries says 'security incident', and police found petrol, no explosives
The UK prime minister says there are 'strong indications' Iran played a part in the arrest of five men near a Gloucestershire airbase used by US bombers. He gave no evidence. The five are on bail and have not been charged. The reports we hold do not agree on what to call what happened.
What was said. Andy Burnham told the BBC on Wednesday: "There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford." The Independent, its AP wire copy, ABC News (Australia) and The Guardian all carry the line. Asked why he believed it, he said, in The Guardian's account: "I can't go into all of those details."
What was found. The Independent and the AP copy say police found petrol in the vans and no explosives. Five British men in their 20s were arrested on Sunday and bailed on Monday without charge.
Four reports, four words for it.
| Report | Headline | Body |
|---|---|---|
| The Independent | "suspected ... bomb plot" | "suspected terror plot" |
| AP, in The Independent | "security incident" | "incident" |
| ABC News (Australia) | "incident" | "the plot" |
| The Guardian | "incident" | "events" |
Who is heard. All four quote Burnham. Only ABC says Iran "has previously denied involvement". Only The Guardian carries Burnham's defence of bail. It is also the only one to say one of the five arrested men called the police himself.
Not settled. - What the Iran link rests on. No report we hold says. - What the men were planning. The AP copy says Burnham gave no details. - Whether anyone will be charged. Police would not say when the men must answer bail, The Independent reports. - When it happened. The Guardian says "Sunday night". ABC and the police statement say Sunday morning.
What this is about. Five men were arrested next to a British air base that American bombers have used against Iran. The UK government now says Iran probably played a part in whatever they were doing.
How it got here. Iran and Israel have been in open conflict since the Gaza war that followed the Hamas-led attacks on Israel of 7 October 2023. The United States, Israel's closest ally, was drawn into strikes on Iran. The Independent reports that Sir Keir Starmer, as prime minister, let the US use British bases for "defensive" strikes against Tehran during the Middle East war. It says American bombers have used RAF Fairford in recent months.
The base. RAF Fairford is in Gloucestershire, in the west of England. It is a Royal Air Force station, but for decades it has mainly hosted US Air Force heavy bombers. That is why the AP calls it "US-run", and why Washington has a stake in the case.
The actors. - The UK government, now led by Andy Burnham of Labour. He chaired Cobra, the government's emergency committee, on the case. He would decide whether to recall Parliament, which is in recess for the party conferences. - Counter-terrorism police. They made the arrests and released the men on bail while they investigate. - The US government. Donald Trump and his secretary of state, Marco Rubio, have both criticised the bail decision. - Iran, which both governments have named. ABC reports that Iran has denied involvement before.
What is at stake. Suppose the UK shows that Iran was behind a move against a base hosting US aircraft. Then Britain is a direct target in the war, not only a host for it. That would shape the alliance with Washington and UK security policy. If the UK cannot show it, a prime minister will have named a foreign state without public evidence.
Where it stands. No one has been charged. The five are on bail under what police call very strict conditions. Burnham says he will say more "in due course".
