CBC names the Emirati president as the man who warned Netanyahu; taz says only "at the highest level"

Four reports, one newspaper's account. Three carry the warning and only one names who gave it. None carries a word from Netanyahu.

Opposition leaders say Oct. 7 state inquiry will be their first policy, demand truth from Netanyahu
Opposition leaders say Oct. 7 state inquiry will be their first policy, demand truth from Netanyahu as published by The Jerusalem Post · seen at The Jerusalem Post

The claim. CBC News, taz and Der Standard all report that Benjamin Netanyahu was warned, days before 7 October 2023, that Hamas was planning a major operation. All three credit a Haaretz investigation. We do not hold that investigation. No report we hold carries the documents or a second source.

Who did the warning

Outlet Who is named as warning How the source is carried
CBC News "the president of the United Arab Emirates" "according to an Israeli newspaper" — not named
taz nobody: the warning came "auf höchster Ebene" names Haaretz
Der Standard nobody: he was "persönlich gewarnt" names Haaretz
The Jerusalem Post the warning is not mentioned —

What is being demanded. The Jerusalem Post is the only report we hold that carries the answer from Israel's opposition. Naftali Bennett, Gadi Eisenkot and Avigdor Liberman say that "as soon as a government under our leadership is established", they will set up a state commission of inquiry into "the failures that led to the October 7 massacre". The report does not say what prompted the pledge this week.

Not settled. Who warned him, and whether he acted. One report names a warner; two name the newspaper. Not one of the four carries a denial, an answer or a no-comment from Netanyahu or his office, and none says whether one was sought.

What this is about. A question of accountability in Israel: whether its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was personally warned before the Hamas-led attack of 7 October 2023, and what he did with the warning.

How it got here.

  • 2007: Hamas, an armed Islamist movement, took control of the Gaza Strip. Israel and Egypt then tightened a blockade of the territory.
  • 2020: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) opened formal relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords, a set of deals brokered by the United States. This gave an Arab head of state a direct line to Israel's leaders.
  • 7 October 2023: Hamas-led fighters crossed from Gaza into southern Israel, killing and kidnapping people in towns, army posts and at a music festival. It was the deadliest day in Israel's history. Israel's war in Gaza followed.
  • Since then: Israelis have argued over who failed. Some of the heads of the army and the internal security service (Shin Bet) have accepted responsibility and left office. Netanyahu has not set up a state commission of inquiry. Under Israeli law, this is the strongest form of investigation: its members are appointed by the president of the Supreme Court, not by the government.
  • 8 September 2026: The Jerusalem Post reported that the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, citing three senior foreign sources, said the UAE president had warned Netanyahu about 10 days before the attack.

Who is involved.

  • Netanyahu: prime minister before, during and since the attack. He is running in the elections due this year.
  • Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan: president of the UAE since 2022. He is named in the report as the person who gave the warning.
  • The opposition: Naftali Bennett, a former prime minister; Gadi Eisenkot, a former army chief; Avigdor Liberman, a former defence minister; and Yair Golan. According to the Jerusalem Post, they accuse Netanyahu of blaming the security services.

What is at stake. If he was warned directly and did nothing, the failure moves from the intelligence services to the head of government. That would happen during an election campaign. If the account does not hold up, it becomes one more charge in a campaign already fought over 7 October.

Where it stands. The claim rests on one newspaper's reporting, which we do not hold. In the reports we hold, Netanyahu has not answered it.

What is being argued about

  • Whether the Israeli prime minister was warned before 7 October 2023, and by whom
  • Three outlets carrying one Israeli newspaper's investigation as three reports
  • The opposition pledge of a state commission of inquiry into the failures of that day
  • The absence of any response from Netanyahu across every report we hold

The bias in this coverageBias

Three words for one day

The four reports call 7 October an attack, terror attacks and a massacre, and each choice sits in the headline or the first line. None gives a death toll and none names anyone killed. Three of the four say the whole account rests on one Israeli newspaper.

3 different words used for the same day 0 reports giving a death toll or naming a person killed 3 reports naming the single newspaper as the source

No answer from the man accused

Not one of the four reports carries a response from Netanyahu, his office or anyone speaking for him, though two frame the story around his election campaign. One quotes three opposition leaders on what they would do in government. The gap may be that no response was given, and no report says which.

0 reports carrying a reply from Netanyahu or his office 1 reports quoting opposition figures 3 reports tying the story to the coming election
Scored without the mastheads. Where the two passes differ, both are kept.
