Der Standard says four Italian warships for Bab al-Mandab; the Frankfurter Allgemeine says one more frigate, if Brussels pays
Two European papers describe different Italian commitments to the same strait on the same day. Asharq Al-Awsat calls the force that hit Riyadh "the terrorist Houthi militia"; the Reuters copy Al-Monitor carries names nobody at all.
The strait. The Frankfurter Allgemeine reports the EU's Red Sea escort operation has just one Greek and one Italian frigate at sea, and that Rome has asked the EU's Kaja Kallas for at least six warships, offering one further frigate if partners pay for it. Italy's defence minister Guido Crosetto said on Friday Rome would not wait for Brussels. On Saturday the frigate Carlo Bergamini escorted the container ship Jolly Oro north through Bab al-Mandab without incident, the Italian navy said. About 40% of Italian foreign trade goes that way.
Who struck Saudi Arabia, in each report's words.
| Report | What it said | Attributed? |
|---|---|---|
| Asharq Al-Awsat | "the terrorist Houthi militia's continued attacks, including the attack targeting Riyadh" | The label is the report's own; the statement is Speaker Mohammed Al-Yamahi's, via the Saudi agency SPA |
| LBCI | The Arab interior ministers' council secretariat received news of the attack "with strong condemnation" | To the secretariat |
| Al-Monitor (Reuters) | "drone and missile strikes on Saudi Arabia" | Nobody is named as firing them |
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | A Houthi air attack on the Saudi base at Taif badly damaged an Italian Eurofighter | The no-injuries account is credited to Rome |
Not settled. Italy's own commitment: Der Standard reports a planned dispatch of four warships; the Frankfurter Allgemeine reports one extra frigate offered to an EU operation. Those are not the same thing. What the attack on Riyadh did: no report we hold describes damage or injury there, or names anyone hurt anywhere. None carries a Houthi account of any of it.
This is a story about a narrow sea passage, a war in Yemen, and how far Italy has been drawn into it.
How it got here. Bab al-Mandab is the strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. It is the southern gate to the Red Sea and so to the Suez Canal: ships between Asia and Europe pass through it or go the long way round Africa. Yemen has been at war since the Houthi movement took the capital, Sanaa, in 2014 and a Saudi-led coalition intervened the following year. From late 2023 the Houthis attacked merchant shipping in the Red Sea. The European Union answered in February 2024 with a naval escort operation whose mandate is defensive — the Frankfurter Allgemeine says it may use force only to protect merchant ships against attack. Italy went further. The same report says that since March it has kept around 400 soldiers, four Eurofighters and a radar aircraft at a Saudi air base in the west of the country, under a support mission with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain, to help defend Saudi airspace against Houthi drones and missiles.
Who is in it. Saudi Arabia, now being hit at home. The Houthis, who the Frankfurter Allgemeine says have signalled to Rome that Italian equipment is a target because Italy helps in the air war; the same report calls them Iranian-backed without saying who says so. Italy, with both its cargo and its aircraft exposed. The EU, asked for more ships. Two Arab bodies issuing condemnations. Iran, which Al-Monitor reports warned on Sunday against a new attack by the United States and its allies.
What is at stake. Whether guarding the strait stays a European job or becomes a national one, and whether a state flying combat aircraft for one side in a war can still present itself as a neutral escort. Der Standard makes that its headline question.
Where it stands. One escort completed on Saturday. A letter to Brussels unanswered. Italian opposition parties demanding the defence minister report to parliament.
What is being argued about
- Whether Italy is sending four warships of its own to Bab al-Mandab, or one more frigate to an EU operation
- What to call the force that struck Riyadh — and whether to name it at all
- Italian combat aircraft based in Saudi Arabia, and whether that makes Italy a party to the war
- The absence of any Houthi or Yemeni account in the reports we hold
