Dutch ban: 'West Bank, Golan imports' to The Jerusalem Post, 'products from Israeli settlements' to Haaretz
The Netherlands has banned goods from Israeli settlements. Two Israeli papers name the goods differently and lead with different Israeli complaints. Neither report we hold quotes a Dutch or Palestinian voice.
What happened. The Netherlands has banned imports of products from Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the Golan Heights. The Jerusalem Post and Haaretz both report the ban. Haaretz says it came "recently" but gives no date.
Two names for the same goods.

Who speaks. Gilad Cohen, the Foreign Ministry's political director, told The Jerusalem Post the ban harms all Israelis. He warned Israel would respond. Haaretz says the ministry's consular division issued a notice about bag searches of Israelis in the Netherlands.
Whose account. We hold two reports on the ban. Both come from Israeli outlets, both are in English, and both carry only the Israeli government's account. We hold no Dutch-language report on the ban.
What is not settled. - What Israel's promised response would be. The Jerusalem Post does not say. - How many bag searches took place, when, or who carried them out. Haaretz gives no count, and nobody else confirms them. - Why the Dutch government imposed the ban, and when it took effect. Neither report says.
What this is about. The Netherlands, a European Union member, has stopped goods made in Israeli settlements from entering its market.
How it got here. Israel took the West Bank from Jordan and the Golan Heights from Syria in the war of June 1967. It has held both ever since. In 1981 it extended its law to the Golan. The UN Security Council declared that void. Only the United States has recognised it, since 2019. In the West Bank, Israel has built settlements for its own citizens. Most governments, the UN and the International Court of Justice regard the settlements as unlawful under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Israel disputes that.
Until now Europe has dealt with settlement goods through labels, not bans. Since 2015 the European Commission has said settlement products must not be sold as "made in Israel". The EU's top court upheld labelling in 2019. In July 2024 the International Court of Justice gave an advisory opinion. It found Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory unlawful. It said states should not aid or assist in keeping the occupation going, including through trade. Pressure on European governments grew during the war in Gaza that followed the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023.
Who is involved. The Dutch government imposed the ban. Israel's Foreign Ministry opposes it. Two parties are not quoted in any report we hold: Palestinians, on whose land the West Bank settlements stand, and Syria, which claims the Golan.
What is at stake. EU trade policy is mostly set in Brussels, not by single member states. A national ban goes further than the EU's labelling rules. If it stands, other states may copy it. Israel says it will respond but has not said how.
Where it stands. Both reports say the ban is in place. Neither gives the date it took effect.
What is being argued about
- Whether the banned goods are called settlement products or West Bank and Golan imports
- Israel's warning that it will respond to unilateral measures
- Unconfirmed reports of bag searches of Israelis in the Netherlands
- No Dutch or Palestinian voice in either report
