El Mundo quotes "reduce the pace"; Observador says Musk and Altman back "halting" it — eight reports, one quotation

Eight reports say Anthropic's Dario Amodei asked the industry to slow down. One prints what he wrote. The rest use six different words for it, and five add two backers that none of them quotes.

One quotation. Of the eight reports we hold, one prints what Dario Amodei wrote. El Mundo quotes him: "we must reduce the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models." Dagens Nyheter is the only one that says where it appeared — a post on his company's own site.

The backers. Five reports say Sam Altman, Elon Musk or both supported him. None quotes either man. None says where or when either spoke. Vedomosti's headline puts the two of them ahead of the man who made the request, who appears there as a title. Frankfurter Allgemeine names Altman alone, inside a business roundup.

Why it is a markets story. Amodei sells what he is asking the industry to build more slowly. A brake proposed by one seller is a claim about who sets the pace.

Not settled. Whether Altman or Musk said anything at all, and in what words. Which reason Amodei gave — misuse, or control. Whether any company has changed anything. No report we hold quotes a researcher, a regulator or anyone outside the three firms.

What this is about. The head of one of the largest artificial-intelligence companies has asked the industry, his own firm included, to slow down how fast it makes its AI systems more capable.

How it got here.

  • 2015: OpenAI is founded in San Francisco as a non-profit research lab. Elon Musk is a co-founder. Sam Altman later becomes its chief executive. Musk leaves its board in 2018.
  • 2021: Dario Amodei and other former OpenAI staff leave and found Anthropic. The company says its focus is AI safety. It sells AI models under the name Claude.
  • November 2022: OpenAI releases ChatGPT. Large technology firms and investors respond by pouring money into building bigger models.
  • March 2023: An open letter from the Future of Life Institute asks labs to pause training their most powerful systems for six months. Musk signs it. No major lab pauses.
  • 2023: Musk founds his own AI company, xAI. He later sues OpenAI over its move away from its non-profit roots.
  • 2024: The European Union adopts its AI Act, the first broad law on the technology.

The actors.

  • Anthropic and Amodei: they made the request. They also sell the product they want built more slowly.
  • OpenAI and Altman: Anthropic's main rival, and the maker of ChatGPT.
  • Musk and xAI: a third competitor. Musk has been in open legal conflict with OpenAI.

All three compete for the same customers, the same investors and the same engineers.

What is at stake.

  • If the leading firms slow down together, the pace of the technology is set by a handful of private companies, not by any law.
  • If one firm slows down alone, its rivals can take the ground it gives up.
  • Critics have long argued that calls for caution from market leaders can shut out smaller rivals. The companies dispute that.

Where it stands. On 12 September 2026, Amodei published the call on Anthropic's own website. The reports we hold do not say what a slowdown would mean in practice, whether any company has changed its plans, or whether any government has responded.
