EU condemns "hostility that targeted Makkah"; the Houthi leader "strongly rejected" that Mecca was targeted at all
Saudi Arabia's partners condemned Houthi attacks on the kingdom on Friday. Only one of the six reports we hold carries the Houthi denial. None of them says what was hit in Mecca, or whether anyone was hurt.
What is claimed. The EU "strongly condemned" Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, "including the recent hostility that targeted Makkah", Asharq Al-Awsat reports. The paper is relaying the Saudi Press Agency. It says Tunisia, Uzbekistan and Oman also condemned the attacks.
What is denied. Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of Ansarallah, "strongly rejected" the Saudi accusation that his forces targeted Mecca, the Tehran Times reports. It gives no further detail.
Six reports, three accounts
| Outlet | What it carries | Mecca named? | Name for the force |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asharq Al-Awsat | The EU condemns attacks "including ... Makkah" | Yes | "Houthi militia" |
| Asharq Al-Awsat | Turkey condemns "the drone attack that targeted Saudi Arabia last weekend" | No | "Houthis" |
| An-Nahar, LBCI | Kallas says Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia are unacceptable and the EU's Red Sea mission raised its alert | No | "Houthis" |
| IRNA | Kallas and the Saudi foreign minister discussed Yemen and shipping | No | — |
| Tehran Times | The Houthi leader rejects the accusation | Named, and denied | "Yemeni Armed Forces" |
What is not settled
- Whether anything struck Mecca. No report we hold says what was hit, or where.
- Whether anyone was hurt. None of the six names or counts a single person.
- Whether Turkey's "drone attack ... last weekend" is the Mecca incident or a different one.
- Both accounts reach us second-hand. We could not read Saudi state media or Houthi-run media directly.
This story is about whether Yemen's Houthi movement attacked Mecca, the holiest city in Islam. It is also about whether the condemnations that followed rest on something that happened.
How it got here. The Houthis call their movement Ansarallah. They seized Yemen's capital, Sanaa, in September 2014. In March 2015 a Saudi-led coalition went to war to restore the government the Houthis had pushed out. During that war the Houthis repeatedly fired missiles and drones into Saudi Arabia. A UN-brokered truce in April 2022 largely stopped the fire across the border, but no final peace deal followed. From November 2023 the Houthis attacked shipping in the Red Sea and said they were acting over Israel's war in Gaza. In February 2024 the EU launched Aspides, a naval mission to protect merchant ships there.
Who is involved. Saudi Arabia leads the coalition against the Houthis. Its king is the guardian of Mecca and Medina. The Houthis govern Sanaa and much of northern Yemen. Iran is their main foreign ally. Saudi Arabia and Western governments accuse Tehran of arming the Houthis, and Tehran denies it. Two of the six reports come from Iranian state media. The EU is involved through Aspides and its diplomacy with Riyadh. Turkey, Oman, Tunisia and Uzbekistan spoke as Saudi Arabia's partners.
What is at stake. An attack aimed at Mecca would be of a different order from a strike on an oil site or a ship. It would matter to Muslim-majority governments far beyond the Gulf. If it did not happen, the condemnations rest on an accusation and not on an event.
Where it stands. The reports we hold point to renewed fighting. An-Nahar reports that Kallas spoke of diplomatic efforts to end the fighting in Yemen and to restore free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. None of our reports says when the fighting resumed or what closed the strait.

What is being argued about
- Whether a strike on Mecca happened: the EU condemned it through Saudi state media, and the Houthi leader denied it
- Only 2 of 6 reports mention Mecca at all. Turkey's and Kallas's words, as the reports carry them, speak of Saudi Arabia in general
- One force, two names: "Houthi militia" in Asharq Al-Awsat's own voice, "Yemeni Armed Forces" in the Tehran Times
- No report names or counts anyone hurt
