F-35 canopy 'diverted to China', says Der Standard's headline; 'diverted to Hong Kong' and missing, says its own text
Two reports agree that a classified F-35 part left Australia for the US and ended up in Hong Kong. They disagree on whether that means China. Neither says who sent it there.
What both reports say. A classified F-35 part was on its way from Australia to the United States. It was diverted to Hong Kong. Der Standard says it has been missing since then. The Jerusalem Post says the components "disappear" after they were diverted.
Where they split. Der Standard's headline says the technology was "nach China umgeleitet" (diverted to China). Its own text says Hong Kong. The Jerusalem Post treats China as a risk. The incident "raised concerns that China may gain access", it writes, citing Politico.

Who is named as acting. No one. Both reports say only that the part "was diverted". Neither names a shipper, a carrier or a buyer.
Who is quoted. No government. Neither report quotes Washington, Canberra, Beijing or Lockheed Martin.
What is not settled - Whether the part reached mainland China. Neither report shows that it did. - Who diverted it, and whether by mistake or on purpose. - Whether it has been found. - Both reports appear to rest on one earlier account. We have not read Politico's report itself.
What this is about. A piece of classified US fighter-jet technology went off course between two allies and ended up in Hong Kong.
How it got here. The F-35 is a stealth fighter built by the US company Lockheed Martin. It was developed as a joint programme with partner nations, and Australia has been a partner from the start. Australian firms make parts for the global fleet, so components regularly cross the Pacific between Australia and the United States.
Stealth parts are among the most tightly guarded reports the US exports. US arms-export rules govern how they move. Sending such technology anywhere new needs US government approval.
Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China. Britain handed it back to Chinese rule in 1997. In 2020, after Beijing imposed a national security law on the city, Washington stopped treating Hong Kong separately from mainland China for export controls. That is why a shipment that ends in Hong Kong raises a question about China at all.
Behind this sits a long contest between the US and China over military technology. US prosecutors have in the past charged Chinese nationals with plotting to steal data on US military aircraft, the F-35 among them.
The actors. The United States owns the technology and sets the rules for moving it. Australia is where the shipment started. China is the country whose possible access is the worry. Lockheed Martin builds the jet.
What is at stake. If the part reached Chinese hands, a rival could study the stealth design of a jet that the US and its allies fly. If it was a routing mistake, the question is how a controlled part left its supply chain without anyone noticing. Either way, the countries that share F-35 parts rely on trusting each other's controls.
Where it stands. The reports say the part is missing. They do not say who is investigating.
What is being argued about
- Whether a part diverted to Hong Kong counts as sent to China
- Who diverted the shipment, and how
- How controlled F-35 parts move between Australia and the US
- What China could learn from a stealth cockpit canopy
