Flydubai flight to Tel Aviv: Jerusalem Post says 'attempted hijacking', Libération says 'alleged attack'
On Wednesday a co-pilot attacked the other pilot on a Dubai–Tel Aviv flight, The Independent reports, and the plane landed in Saudi Arabia. Three outlets are differently sure about what it was. Netanyahu asks whether Iran was behind it. The UAE has only just opened an inquiry into whether it was terrorism.
What is agreed. Flydubai flight FZ1073, from Dubai to Tel Aviv, turned off to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday 30 September after an emergency signal. Passengers reached Ben Gurion on another plane. The Independent says the co-pilot stabbed the other pilot. It says the plane fell 14,000 ft in under 30 seconds, and an off-duty British pilot landed it.
What it is called. The three reports disagree.
| Outlet | Headline | Body |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | "attempted hijacking", stated flat | Netanyahu: "whether Iran was behind it" |
| The Independent | "Flydubai hijacking" | "a possible hijack attempt"; co-pilot "may have attempted to hijack" |
| Libération | "L'attaque" (the attack) | "l'attaque présumée" (the alleged attack) |
The motive. The Jerusalem Post's headline carries Netanyahu saying the co-pilot "underwent Islamist radical indoctrination". The Independent says it is "currently unclear" what motivated him. Libération says the UAE opened an inquiry on Thursday into whether the attack was "de nature terroriste" (terrorist in nature).
Iran. One of the three reports mentions Iran, as a question in Netanyahu's words. No report gives any evidence for it.
Not settled - Whether it was a hijacking attempt. Two headlines say so. Neither report's text shows it. - Who the co-pilot is. No report names him or the injured pilot. - How many were hurt. No report gives a number. - Whether anyone else was involved. Netanyahu says that is still being investigated.
What this is about. An attack in the cockpit of a UAE airliner flying to Israel, and the argument over whether to call it terrorism.
How it got here. The United Arab Emirates and Israel had no diplomatic relations until the Abraham Accords, signed in Washington on 15 September 2020. Direct flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv followed. Flydubai, a low-cost airline owned by the government of Dubai, flies the route.
The route runs under a long shadow. Israel and Iran have been enemies since Iran's 1979 revolution. The Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 were followed by the war in Gaza. In April and October 2024 Israel and Iran struck each other directly. In June 2025 they fought a twelve-day war, and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. Any violence on a plane bound for Israel is now read through that conflict first.
The actors. - The UAE owns the airline and is investigating. It has not yet said whether this was terrorism. - Israel was the destination. Its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has spoken about the attacker's motive before any finding. - Iran is named only in a question from Netanyahu. - Saudi Arabia is where the plane landed. It has no diplomatic relations with Israel.
What is at stake. Investigators may find a hijacking with a state behind it. Then an attack on a civilian route between the UAE and Israel becomes part of the Iran conflict. They may instead find one pilot acting alone. Then it is mainly about how airlines screen pilots, which Libération and The Independent both ask.
Where it stands. The UAE opened its inquiry on Thursday 1 October. No report we hold names the attacker or gives a finding.
What is being argued about
- Two of three headlines say 'hijacking', and one of those two hedges it in its own text
- Netanyahu's claim that the co-pilot was radicalised, and his question about Iran: one report carries both, with no evidence alongside
- The UAE inquiry into whether the attack was terrorism, which only Libération reports
- How airlines screen pilots after a co-pilot attacked a colleague in flight
