G7 fuel release: '100 million barrels' says the Sydney Morning Herald, 'up to 100m' says the Guardian, '100 million barrels of diesel' says RTÉ
G7 leaders agreed on Friday to release emergency oil and fuel stocks, and on the same day British diesel passed £2 a litre for the first time. The reports differ on how much will be released, which fuel and how fast. The joint statement says 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products over four months, with diesel coming first.
What was agreed. The Sydney Morning Herald and The Independent both quote the joint G7 statement. It promises a release "through the IEA of 100 million barrels" that will "begin immediately over 4 months", including "a front-loaded substantial diesel release within the first 20 days".
Why it lands in Britain. Average UK diesel reached 200.01p a litre on Friday, according to RAC figures carried by The Independent. The old record of 199.09p was set in June 2022.
Five reports, three sizes, three fuels
| Outlet | Size | Fuel | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney Morning Herald | 100 million barrels | oil and fuel products | Trump: "immediately" |
| CBC News | 100 million barrels | oil, including diesel | starts now, takes four months |
| The Guardian | "up to 100m" | diesel and crude oil | "within four months", per Macron |
| The Independent | "up to" in the headline, 100 million in the body | petroleum reserves | over four months |
| RTÉ News | 100 million barrels | all of it diesel | not given |
Who made it happen. The Guardian says leaders acted "after coming under pressure from Donald Trump". The Independent leads with Ed Miliband's hope that the deal will "shield households and businesses".
The war behind the price. The Guardian names a "US-Israel war on Iran". CBC calls it fighting "between the U.S. and Iran". The Sydney Morning Herald names no one as starting it, and the only reason for the war it gives is Trump's.
Not settled. The statement counts "commitments that have already been fulfilled", so we cannot tell how much of the 100 million is new. No report we hold says how much of it is diesel or how much each country will release.
What this is about. The richest democracies are releasing emergency fuel stocks to bring down prices that a war in the Gulf has pushed up.
How it got here. Iran and Israel have been fighting more and more openly since the Gaza war that followed the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023. They struck each other directly in 2024. In June 2025 they fought a short war, during which the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. The Guardian dates the current war to late February 2026 and calls it the "US-Israel war on Iran". It says the war disrupted supplies of crude oil and refined fuel from the Gulf, the region that supplies much of the world's oil. Who is to blame for the war is disputed. The Sydney Morning Herald reports Trump's view that the cost is worth paying to stop Iran getting nuclear weapons.
Who is involved. The G7 is the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada, and the European Union also takes part. France holds the rotating chair this year, so President Macron ran Friday's video call. The International Energy Agency was set up in 1974, after the Arab oil embargo, to coordinate its members' emergency stocks. The G7 statement refers back to an earlier round of commitments made in March 2026. In Washington, some Republicans had called for a ban on US diesel exports, a step that would have hurt Europe. The Independent reports that Andy Burnham, the UK prime minister, missed the call to attend his father's funeral. Australia, New Zealand and Ireland are not G7 members, but they buy fuel on the same world market.
What is at stake. The Guardian says diesel is the biggest single cost for many small traders, farmers and hauliers. The US holds midterm elections on 3 November. In the UK, a 5p rise in fuel duty is due to take full effect in spring 2027.
Where it stands. The leaders have agreed the release. None of the reports we hold say yet how much each country will draw down.
What is being argued about
- Whether the release is a firm 100 million barrels or a ceiling of "up to" 100 million
- Whether it is diesel, crude oil or both, and how fast it arrives
- How much US pressure, including a threatened diesel export ban, drove the deal
- Record diesel prices in the UK, the US and Australia
