Greens' Zionism motion 'widely condemned', says the Independent; 'Zionists attack Green Party', says the Morning Star
Two British papers report the same conference vote. One makes the party's critics the story. The other casts them as attackers. Only one gives the count, and only one carries calls for Labour to rule out a coalition.
The vote. Green Party members at their Brighton conference passed a motion declaring the Greens an "anti-Zionist party". It says Zionism will be "treated as any other form of racism". The Morning Star gives the count: 1,022 to 813. The Independent says it passed but gives no figures.
Two framings.
| The Independent | Morning Star | |
|---|---|---|
| Headline subject | Burnham, facing coalition calls | "Zionists", attacking the party |
| Reaction, in its own voice | "widely condemned" | "attacks from zionists" |
| Board of Deputies | "said" | "claimed" |
| Gaza | "genocide" only in Greens' own statement | "the genocide in Gaza", unattributed |
| Israel's entry ban | no actor named | names Israel's foreign ministry |
| Named backers quoted | 1 | 2 |
| Vote count | none | 1,022 to 813 |
Where they agree. Both carry the chief rabbi, Sir Ephraim Mirvis, calling the motion a "threat to British Jews and to Britain". Both name the same four of the five Green MPs who rejected it, in near-identical words.
Only in the Independent. Five people in and around Labour, one unnamed, urge the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, to rule out a coalition. Barrister Adam Wagner KC sees a "strong risk" the motion breaks the Equality Act 2010.
Not settled. Whether the motion is lawful. A Green spokesperson told the Morning Star it has no "material impact on governance or disciplinary procedures". No court and no regulator has ruled. Neither report carries a reply from Burnham himself.
What this is about. Britain's Green Party has voted to call Zionism racism, and the vote now bears on whether Labour could govern with the Greens.
How it got here. The war in Gaza began after Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023. It split British politics, and the left most of all. Arguments over Israel and antisemitism had already marked Labour. In 2018 the party adopted in full the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism. One of the definition's examples is calling the existence of a State of Israel a racist endeavour. In 2020 the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) found Labour had broken equality law in how it handled antisemitism complaints.
The Greens were long a small party. They have grown under Zack Polanski, who became leader in 2025, and the Independent reports they now have five MPs. The Morning Star describes Polanski as Jewish and as vocal on Gaza.
Who is involved. - The Green Party. Its members passed the motion. Both reports say four of its five MPs opposed it. - Labour. In government under Andy Burnham. The Independent reports that some around Labour have floated a pact with the Greens. The motion gives opponents of a pact a reason to refuse one. - Britain's Jewish bodies. The chief rabbi and the Board of Deputies of British Jews speak for much of organised British Jewry. - Israel. Both reports say its government has barred Polanski from entering the country over the vote. - The law. The Equality Act 2010 applies to political parties, and the EHRC enforces it.
What is at stake. For the Greens: whether the motion can be enforced against members without breaking the law. For Labour: whether a partner it may need is one it can work with.
Where it stands. The motion is now party policy, but Green politicians do not have to back it. The Independent reports that Polanski is standing within days in a by-election in Holborn and St Pancras, the seat Sir Keir Starmer left.
