Guardian leads on a legal risk, Novara calls it a first: two readings of the Greens' 1,022-to-813 vote on Zionism
Five reports give the same count. They disagree on what the vote was. The Guardian leads on MPs who oppose it and a likely court challenge. Novara Media calls it a milestone. The Independent leads on the leader who missed it. The Morning Star carries the party's own words.
The count is agreed. All five reports give 1,022 votes to 813 at the Green Party conference in Brighton. The motion declares the party "anti-zionist". The Morning Star reports that zionism will be "treated as any other form of racism."
What the vote means is not agreed.

| The Guardian | Most Green MPs oppose it; a challenge under equality law is expected | Yes |
| The Independent (bulletin) | Leader Zack Polanski "skips vote" | Yes |
| Novara Media | "the first explicitly anti-Zionist mainstream political party in the UK" | Text we hold breaks off |
| Morning Star | The party's statement | No |
| The Independent (short report) | The result only | No |
Who is heard. The Morning Star quotes a party spokesperson at length, who calls it "a serious and deeply felt debate". The Independent says four of the party's five MPs rejected the motion, including Adrian Ramsay and Carla Denyer. It also says Jewish community leaders condemned it as "an overtly antisemitic platform", but it names none of them. The Guardian cites one KC, also unnamed. No report quotes a member who voted for the motion.
What is not settled. - Whether anyone will bring a challenge under equality law, and whether it would succeed. - Who the KC is. - Whether the vote is a "first". Only Novara says so, and it gives no source. - What the MPs will do now. No report quotes one of them.
What this is about. Members of the Green Party of England and Wales voted to call Zionism a form of racism. The party now has MPs in the House of Commons, so the vote matters beyond the party.
How it got here. Zionism is the movement that sought a Jewish state. The State of Israel was founded in 1948. The claim that "Zionism is racism" is old. The UN General Assembly adopted it in Resolution 3379 in 1975 and revoked it in 1991. Israel and Palestine have argued over land, borders and statehood ever since. The war in Gaza that followed the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 brought that argument back into British politics, and it has divided every major party. The Greens, long a party of one MP, won four seats at the July 2024 general election. Zack Polanski became leader in 2025. The Independent reports that the party now has five MPs.
Who is involved. - Party members set policy by voting at conference. That is how this motion passed. - The MPs speak for the party in Parliament. The Independent says four of the five oppose the motion. - The leader, Zack Polanski, was not in the hall. The Independent says he had left to campaign in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election. - Jewish community leaders condemned the motion, the Independent reports.
What is at stake. The Equality Act 2010 bars associations, political parties among them, from discriminating against members on grounds that include race and religion. In 2020 the Equality and Human Rights Commission found that Labour had broken the law over antisemitism. The Guardian reports that some Green members are expected to challenge this policy under the same law. Whether that would succeed is a legal question that is still open.
Where it stands. The motion is now party policy. The text also calls for a single Palestinian state, so the party's position on Israel's existence is now part of the dispute.
What is being argued about
- Members passed the motion 1,022 to 813, against the stated view of four of the party's five MPs
- Whether the policy could be challenged under the Equality Act
- Whether the vote makes the Greens the first anti-Zionist mainstream UK party, as Novara Media says
- The leader's absence from the vote
