Guardian says Houthi advances moved oil past $107; UPI says Trump on Iran
Four reports on one Thursday's surge. Three carry a price, three name a cause, and no two causes are the same.
The move. The Guardian reports crude jumped 6% on Thursday to above $107 a barrel, and says nervous investors across big economies have been dumping government bonds, driving up the cost of borrowing. UPI reports the same day's surge and gives no figure.
Why it moved. The Guardian names advances by Houthi rebels along Yemen's Red Sea coast that "could choke off Saudi crude exports" — and, in the same breath, "out-of-control government borrowing", attributed to nobody. UPI names one cause and only one: Trump saying the night before he "isn't looking to reach a deal with Iran". TASS names "the war involving the US, Israel, and Iran", and names nobody as having started it. Life.ru names no cause. No report sets one cause against another.
Three prices, three different measures.
| Measure | What it says | Whose figure |
|---|---|---|
| Crude | up 6% in a day, to above $107 a barrel | The Guardian, the only oil price we hold |
| European gas | above $1,000 per 1,000 cubic metres, first time since December 2022 | Life.ru, crediting The Wall Street Journal |
| Government borrowing | cost rising as investors sell bonds — no rate, no figure | The Guardian |
Not settled. Whether $107 is the price: one report gives it, none contradicts it. Whether gas passed $1,000: Life.ru credits The Wall Street Journal, which we do not hold. Why oil rose. And who pays it — three of the four reports carry a price, and none quotes a household, a haulier or an importing country.
What this is about. A war in the Middle East is moving the price of energy, and the price of energy is moving what governments pay to borrow.
How it got here. The reports we hold describe a war involving the United States, Israel and Iran — that is TASS's phrasing, citing an analytical note the IMF published in mid-July 2026. None of the reports says how the war began, and we do not hold an account of its origin, so we do not give one.
The public record behind it is older. Iran and Israel have been hostile for decades; Iran does not recognise Israel, and the United States is Israel's principal military ally, which is the standing commitment that draws Washington into any war Israel fights. Yemen has been at war since the Houthi movement took the capital, Sanaa, in 2014 and a Saudi-led coalition intervened in March 2015. The Houthis hold much of northern and western Yemen, including territory along the Red Sea — the shipping lane that runs from the Suez Canal down to the Gulf of Aden, and past which Saudi Arabia ships crude from its Red Sea terminals. That is why The Guardian treats Houthi advances there as an oil story.
Europe's gas price has its own history: supply from Russia was cut back after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, and prices spiked that year. Life.ru's marker — the first time above $1,000 per 1,000 cubic metres since December 2022 — is a return to that period's levels.
What is at stake. Oil and gas price everything moved, heated or manufactured. When they rise, inflation is expected to follow; lenders then demand more to hold government debt, which is the bond sell-off The Guardian describes. Households and importing countries pay for both, though none of the four reports asks them.
Where it stands. The IMF's July warning, as TASS reports it, was that much of the world's capacity to cushion this has already been used up.
What is being argued about
- What caused Thursday's oil move
- Whether crude reached $107 a barrel
- European gas above $1,000 per 1,000 cubic metres
- Bond selling and the cost of government borrowing
