Haaretz says Magal berated ex-hostages and bereaved families; Ynet says he left the families out only after a remark from Ben Caspit

On his radio show, Channel 14 host Yinon Magal read out the names of people who wrote for a book criticising Netanyahu over the hostages. He said they could atone only by voting for him. The two reports we hold differ on whether the bereaved stayed in his sights. Neither carries a word from anyone he named.

Pro-Netanyahu radio pundit berates ex-hostages, bereaved families for criticizing prime minister as published by Haaretz · seen at Haaretz
Levant & Iran Israel

What both reports carry. Yinon Magal is a radio broadcaster and a leading pro-government host on Channel 14. On air, he read out the names of people who wrote for a book criticising Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the hostages. Haaretz and Ynet both say he told them to atone at the ballot box.

Where they differ.

Haaretz Ynet (Hebrew)
Headline the verb "berates" his own words: "the most despicable people in Israel"
Who was targeted "ex-hostages, bereaved families" Ofri Bibas, "survivors of captivity and bereaved families"
His demand paraphrased: atone "only by voting for Likud" quoted: cast the Likud ballot slip "for Netanyahu"
The bereaved no exception mentioned "for this purpose I'll exclude the families", said only after the full list and after a remark from Ben Caspit
Length not given about five minutes

What Ynet adds. It calls the broadcast "an aggressive monologue". It quotes him calling the writers "abominable people". It quotes him saying that the vote is "their only option to atone for the abomination".

What is not settled. - Whether leaving out the bereaved was a retraction or an aside. Only Ynet reports it. The Haaretz text we hold does not mention it. - What Ben Caspit said. Ynet calls it a remark and does not quote it. - How anyone he named responded. Neither report quotes one of them. - We hold no recording or transcript of the broadcast.

What this is about. A pro-Netanyahu broadcaster used his radio show to name and condemn Israelis who had criticised the prime minister over the hostages taken to Gaza.

How it got here. On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel and took hostages back to Gaza. Israel went to war in Gaza the same day. The fate of the hostages became the most divisive question in Israeli politics. Families of hostages, freed captives and some bereaved families said the government put its war aims and its coalition ahead of a deal to bring people home. The government and its supporters rejected that charge. A book of writing that criticises Netanyahu over the hostages carries that argument on. Its Hebrew title is Mar Hafkara, roughly "Mr Abandonment".

Who the actors are. - Benjamin Netanyahu leads Likud and has headed the government since late 2022. - Yinon Magal is a radio broadcaster and a host on Channel 14, a commercial television channel. Haaretz calls him a top pro-government host. - Ben Caspit is a columnist who presents the radio show with Magal. - Ofri Bibas is a member of the Bibas family, whose relatives were taken to Gaza on 7 October 2023. Ynet names her among those Magal targeted. - The book's contributors include former hostages and bereaved relatives, according to both reports.

What is at stake. Israel faces a general election this autumn. The Knesset elected in November 2022 serves a four-year term. Magal told the writers that a vote for Likud was their only way to atone. Freed hostages and bereaved families carry moral weight in Israeli public life, so how they are treated on air is part of the campaign.

Where it stands. Both reports we hold were published on 6 October 2026, the day of the broadcast. Neither carries a response from Magal's station, from Likud or from anyone he named.

What is being argued about

  • Whether Magal's attack included the bereaved families, or whether he left them out
  • His demand that critics atone by voting for Likud, quoted by one report and paraphrased by the other
  • Former hostages and the bereaved named on air in an election season
  • No reply from anyone he named
Who is heard: Magal, not those he namedChart
