Henry Street death: TheJournal.ie names him Yves Sakila, The Irish Times calls him 'a Congolese man in his mid 30s'

A man died on Dublin's Henry Street in May. Gardaí are now appealing for a young woman knocked down in the same incident to come forward. Two Irish outlets carried the appeal minutes apart. Only one gave his name.

The appeal. Gardaí want to hear from a young woman who was knocked down during the incident on Henry Street, Dublin, in which a man died. The Irish Times and TheJournal.ie both carry the appeal, and both published it on 4 October within five minutes of each other.

The name. TheJournal.ie names the dead man in its headline: Yves Sakila. The Irish Times gives no name. It gives a nationality and an age: a "Congolese man in his mid 30s".

The Irish Times TheJournal.ie
Names the dead man No Yes, Yves Sakila
Describes him Congolese, mid 30s Not in the text we hold
Date of the incident "in May" Friday 15 May
Says who knocked the woman down No No
Says how he died No No

Where they agree. The place is the same, the month is the same, and so is the appeal. Neither report contradicts the other.

What is not settled. - How Yves Sakila died. Neither report says. - Who or what knocked the woman down. Neither report names anyone as acting. Both call it an "incident". - Whether anyone has been arrested or charged. We hold nothing on it. - Why the woman is being sought now, nearly five months later. Neither report explains. - Each report we hold is a headline and one line, so either outlet may carry more that we have not read.

What this is about. A man died on a Dublin shopping street in May, and the Irish police are still trying to work out what happened.

How it got here. TheJournal.ie dates the incident to Friday 15 May 2026, on Henry Street. Henry Street is one of Dublin's busiest shopping streets. It runs west from O'Connell Street on the north side of the city centre. A young woman was knocked down during the same incident. On 4 October, almost five months later, Gardaí asked her to come forward. The reports we hold do not say why the appeal is coming now.

Who is involved. - An Garda Síochána, Ireland's national police service, known as the Gardaí. It investigates deaths that are not natural and makes public appeals for witnesses. - The dead man. TheJournal.ie names him as Yves Sakila. The Irish Times describes him as a Congolese man in his mid 30s. - The young woman. She was knocked down in the incident. Neither report names her or says whether she was hurt.

Why the name matters. Irish police do not always release the names of people who die. Outlets often name the dead once a family has made the name public, or wait until then. Two outlets reporting the same appeal on the same morning made different choices. One reader learns a name. The other learns a nationality and an age.

What is at stake. The woman may be a witness to how the man died. If she comes forward, Gardaí may be able to establish what happened on Henry Street. If she does not, the reports give no other account of the incident.

Where it stands. The investigation is open. The appeal is public. Neither report we hold says how the man died, who was involved, or whether anyone has been arrested.

  • Whether the dead man is named or described by nationality

Gives no name. Describes him as a Congolese man in his mid 30s.
Gardaí investigating the death of Yves Sakila on Dublin’s Henry Street in May have issued a renewed appeal for witnesses, including asking for a woman in her late teens or early 20s to come forward. During the incident, “a male and a female” were knocked to the ground, gardaí said in a press release, but while they have spoken to the man, they have yet to reach the woman. Sakila, who was Congolese and was in his mid-30s, was suspected of shoplifting from Arnotts and was pursued by security personnel on May 15th at around 5pm. When gardaí arrived on the scene, Sakila had been held on the ground

Names the dead man as Yves Sakila and dates the incident to Friday 15 May.
An account is an optional way to support the work we do. Find out more. In an update on the probe on Sunday afternoon, the Garda Press Office said investigators believe there are also “still other persons who were in the area at the time who have not come forward” to speak with gardaí. Sakila, a Congolese man who had been living in Ireland since 2004, became unresponsive after he was restrained by security guards, before later dying in hospital.
