'Iran suspected', says one headline; Iran's embassy calls it 'malicious speculation'; police say the five held near RAF Fairford are British

Five men were arrested near a British airbase that US bombers have used in the war on Iran. We hold 10 reports on the arrests. One headline raises Iran and five carry Tehran's denial. None names anyone who has linked Iran to the arrests.

Iran suspected in bomb plot against RAF base used by US Air Force, UK police investigating - report
Iran suspected in bomb plot against RAF base used by US Air Force, UK police investigating - report as published by The Jerusalem Post · seen at The Jerusalem Post

What happened. Five men were arrested over the weekend near RAF Fairford, in south-west England, Al-Monitor reports through Reuters. A farmer told the BBC she saw a "large group of hooded and masked men" near the base and called emergency services, The Jerusalem Post reports.

Who they are. UK counter-terrorism police say all five are British nationals from London, Shargh reports. Ynet adds that they are in their 20s.

Who is blamed. The accounts split:

Outlet Who it points to How it describes the five
The Jerusalem Post "Iran suspected", in the headline only, with no source named not stated in the text we hold
Ynet Carries Iran's denial "the terrorists"; attack "foiled"
The Media Line Hamas networks in Europe, in the headline not stated
Al-Monitor, Shargh, LBCI, Al-Modon Iran's embassy: "unfounded and malicious speculations" "British nationals", "suspects"
IRNA No one; carries the US embassy's warning held "on charges" of explosives and terrorism offences

The base. Asharq Al-Awsat and Ynet say US aircraft flew from Fairford to strike Iran.

What is not settled

  • Whether there was a plot at all. No report we hold says what the men planned.
  • Who suspects Iran. No report we hold names an official who does.
  • Whether the men have been charged. Only IRNA uses the word "charges".
  • Ynet reports Donald Trump saying the men were under surveillance. No other report we hold carries that.

What this is about. Police in England arrested five men near an airbase used by American bombers. Outlets disagree on whether Iran had a hand in it.

How it got here. Israel and Iran have been in open confrontation since the war in Gaza that followed the Hamas-led attacks on Israel of 7 October 2023. The two states exchanged direct strikes in 2024. In June 2025 Israel launched a wide air campaign on Iran, and the United States struck Iranian nuclear sites. The United States is Israel's main military ally and has treated Iran's nuclear programme as a threat for two decades. Iran says the programme is peaceful. The reports we hold describe a war on Iran now under way, in which American planes have taken off from RAF Fairford to strike Iran.

The base. RAF Fairford is a Royal Air Force station in Gloucestershire. For decades it has hosted US Air Force heavy bombers sent to Europe. The base is British. The bombers that use it are American.

The actors. UK counter-terrorism police lead the investigation. Iran's government, through its embassy in London, denies any link. The United States has a stake because its aircraft are on the base, and its London embassy has warned Americans in Britain. In no report we hold has the British government accused anyone.

What is at stake. If a state is shown to be behind a plan to attack a base on British soil, Britain will face pressure to respond. It could be drawn further into a war it has so far hosted rather than fought. If the men acted alone, the question becomes how a group got so close to a bomber base in wartime.

Where it stands. Five British men are held. No report we hold says what they planned or who, if anyone, directed them.

What is being argued about

  • Whether Iran had any link to the five men arrested
  • Whether the arrests stopped an attack, or only a suspected one
  • The police statement that all five are British and from London
  • Why a base used for US strikes on Iran matters to the case

The bias in this coverageBias

Iran denies a link that only one headline asserts

Half the reports we hold on the arrests lead with Iran's denial. Only one headline raises Iranian involvement, and it gives no source for the suspicion. Three reports carry the police statement that all five are British and from London.

10 reports on the event 5 reports leading with Iran's denial 3 reports saying the five are British 1 headlines asserting an Iran link without a named source

Arrested men called terrorists before any charge

One report calls the five 'terrorists' and the plot 'foiled' in its own voice. Another says they were held 'on charges of' terrorism. The others say 'arrested' or 'suspects'.

1 reports calling the men terrorists flat 1 reports describing the men as charged
Scored without the mastheads. Where the two passes differ, both are kept.

true UK counter-terrorism police say all five men arrested near RAF Fairford are British nationals.
Three outlets carry it: Al-Monitor through Reuters ('five British nationals'), Shargh quoting the counter-terrorism police ('all five are UK nationals and from London') and Ynet ('all the suspects are London residents in their 20s'). No report we hold contradicts it.

disputed Iran was behind the alleged plot against RAF Fairford.
The Jerusalem Post headline says only that Iran is 'suspected', citing a report, and no report we hold gives evidence of a link. Iran's embassy in London 'categorically rejects' any connection, as carried by Al-Monitor, Shargh, LBCI, Al-Modon and Ynet.

true RAF Fairford has been used by US aircraft in the war on Iran.
Asharq Al-Awsat's headline and Ynet each say it separately: the base was used by the US Air Force in the Iran war, and American planes took off from it for strikes in Iran. The Jerusalem Post's photograph shows a US Air Force B-1 bomber on the base's tarmac on 27 September.
