Iran's Guards say they killed six 'terrorists'; the Jerusalem Post calls the fight one with Baloch militants
Two reports carry one source. Both rest on the Revolutionary Guards' account, which reached them through Iran's state agency. Neither names any of the six dead or quotes anyone else.
What is claimed. Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) killed six people in southeastern Iran. Reuters reported this on 1 October and attributed it to IRNA, Iran's state news agency. The Jerusalem Post headline says the six were "discovered with explosive packages". It cites only "a report".
Whose word it is. Both reports put "terrorists" in quotation marks. Both trace back to the Iranian state. We hold no independent confirmation of the deaths, of the explosives or of who the six were.
Where they part. The Jerusalem Post adds its own frame, with no attribution: "Baloch militants appear to be increasing their fight against the Iranian regime as the IRGC cracks down." Reuters adds no frame.

What is NOT settled. - Who the six were. Neither report names any of them. - Whether they were armed or carried explosives. Only the Guards' account says so. - Where and when it happened. Neither report gives a town or a time. - What Baloch sources say. We hold no account from an armed group, a family or a local outlet.
What this is about. Iran's Revolutionary Guards say they killed six people in the country's southeast. The state has fought an armed Baloch insurgency there for two decades.
How it got here. Sistan-Baluchestan is Iran's southeastern province. It borders Pakistan and Afghanistan. Most of its people are Baloch and Sunni Muslim. Since the 1979 revolution, Iran has been ruled as a Shia Islamic Republic. The province is among Iran's poorest. Baloch armed groups have fought the state there since the mid-2000s, first Jundallah and later Jaish al-Adl. The groups say they are fighting discrimination against the Baloch. Iran calls them terrorists and accuses foreign states of backing them. In January 2024, Iran and Pakistan each struck what they called Baloch militant targets across the border. In September 2022, nationwide protests followed the death of Mahsa Amini in custody. In Zahedan, the provincial capital, security forces fired on protesters.
Who the actors are. - The IRGC is Iran's ideological military force. It answers to the Supreme Leader, not to the elected president. It leads security operations in the province. - IRNA is Iran's official state news agency. It carries the government's account. - Baloch armed groups operate on both sides of the Iran–Pakistan border. - Pakistan holds the larger part of the Baloch homeland and faces its own Baloch insurgency.
What is at stake. One question is whether the border province is becoming more violent. The other is whether anyone outside the Iranian state can say who is being killed there. Little independent reporting comes out of the province.
Where it stands. As of 1 October, the only account we hold of these six deaths is the Guards' own.
What is being argued about
- Who the six dead were: 'terrorists' or 'Baloch militants'
- Whether anyone outside the Iranian state confirms the killings
- Whether Baloch militancy is rising, as the Jerusalem Post suggests
- Whose voices are missing: the dead, their families, Baloch groups
