Irish Times says she was 'pushed' off a balcony; RTÉ says 'serious assault' and describes no fall; TheJournal.ie says gardaí are weighing two explanations
A woman in her 30s died in Beaumont Hospital on Wednesday after an incident in Belmayne, north Dublin, on Monday afternoon. A man in his 20s was arrested and released without charge, and a file has gone to the Director of Public Prosecutions. Three Irish outlets give three different accounts of how she was hurt. The post-mortem has not yet reported.
What all three agree on. The incident was near Main Street, Belmayne, Dublin 13, on Monday 28 September. The woman, in her 30s, was taken to Beaumont Hospital and died on Wednesday. A man in his 20s was arrested on Tuesday and released without charge. The Irish Times and RTÉ News say a file has gone to the DPP.
Where they split. It comes down to one question: did she fall, and why?
| Outlet | How she was hurt | Who says so |
|---|---|---|
| The Irish Times | allegedly "pushed" off a balcony | nobody named; the word is in quotation marks |
| RTÉ News | "a serious assault"; no fall, no balcony | gardaí, in an update |
| TheJournal.ie | assaulted in an apartment, then fell from a height; fled or "knocked from a balcony" | "it is understood"; no one named |
The word in the headline. "Pushed" appears only in the Irish Times. That report never says who used the word. It calls the assault "alleged". RTÉ states the assault without "alleged".
Detail only one outlet carries. TheJournal.ie says she was found on the ground outside the property when gardaí arrived shortly after 3.40pm. It is the only report that mentions an apartment.
What is not settled. - Whether she fell, was pushed, or was hurt some other way. RTÉ and TheJournal.ie say the post-mortem will decide the course of the investigation. - Whether anyone will be charged. That is for the DPP. - Who she was. None of the three reports names her.
What this is about. A woman has died after an incident at a residential area in north Dublin, and police in Ireland are treating it as a serious assault while they wait for medical findings.
How it got here. The incident happened on the afternoon of Monday 28 September near Main Street in Belmayne, a residential district in the Dublin 13 postal area on the city's northern edge. The woman was taken to Beaumont Hospital, the large public hospital that serves north Dublin. A man in his 20s was arrested on Tuesday. She died on Wednesday, and the same day he was released without charge.
Who the actors are. - An Garda Síochána, Ireland's national police force, runs the investigation. The local station is Coolock. Gardaí have assigned a family liaison officer to the woman's family, which is routine in a death under investigation. - The Director of Public Prosecutions is independent of the police and the government. In Ireland, gardaí gather the evidence and send a file; the DPP decides whether anyone is charged, and with what. Release "without charge, pending a file" means that decision has not been made. It is not a finding of innocence or guilt. - The post-mortem. In a suspicious death in Ireland, the examination is normally done by the Office of the State Pathologist. Its findings on how the injuries were caused shape what offence, if any, can be considered.
What is at stake. Whether the death was caused by a push, by a fall during an escape, or by the assault itself can change the charge the DPP considers. It also matters for the man who was arrested: he has not been charged, and he has not been named.
Where it stands. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who were near Main Street, Belmayne between 3pm and 3.45pm on Monday, and for any video or dash-cam footage. The post-mortem was still under way when the three reports were published on Thursday afternoon.
What is being argued about
- Whether the woman was pushed, fell while escaping, or was hurt without any fall
- Who is the source for the word "pushed"
- The arrest, the release without charge, and the file to the DPP
- The post-mortem that will decide the course of the investigation
