IRNA says the Houthis 'freed' the heights over Bab al-Mandeb, Al Jazeera says they 'grab' the strait — and 112,000 or 115,000 have fled
Houthi forces have pushed down Yemen's Red Sea coast towards the strait that guards the Suez route. Four outlets use three different words for that move. Two give displacement totals, and the totals do not match.
The move. Reuters, carried by Al-Monitor, reports a "rapid advance by the Houthi group" along the Red Sea coast. IRNA, Iran's state news agency, says Ansarallah forces took the al-Aghbara range in Lahj province, which overlooks the strait. No report we hold says the strait itself has changed hands.
| Outlet | Word for the move | Whose voice |
|---|---|---|
| IRNA | "freed" the ridges "from the occupation of Saudi-linked forces" | the agency's own |
| Al Jazeera English | Houthis "grab" Bab al-Mandeb | headline |
| Al-Monitor (Reuters) | "rapid advance" | the wire's own |
The displaced. The Jerusalem Post headline gives 112,000 displaced inside Yemen, from a UN agency. Reuters gives 115,000 "on the move", credited to aid agencies. UN News reports the rise and gives no total. None of the three counts the dead.
The fire. Reuters names one displaced woman, Rawya Hassan, who fled al-Bireen camp barefoot. It does not say who fired the bombardment that drove her out. UN News does not name who fired either.
Washington and Rome. Al Jazeera writes that the US "may have little choice but to trust Houthi assurances on shipping". Italy's defence minister, reported by Reuters, called for more warships.
Not settled: - who holds the strait itself, as opposed to the heights above it; - why the two totals differ — whether they cover different dates or different areas; - who shelled the camps; - how many people have been killed. No report we hold gives a figure.
What this is about: Yemen's civil war has flared again. The fighting is now on the coast beside the Bab al-Mandeb, the narrow strait at the southern mouth of the Red Sea.
How it got here. The Houthi movement, which calls itself Ansarallah, is a Zaydi Shia armed group from Yemen's north. It took the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014 and forced out the internationally recognised government. In March 2015 a coalition led by Saudi Arabia went to war to restore that government. The war split the country. The Houthis held Sanaa and most of the populous north-west. Government-aligned forces, several of them rivals of one another, held the south and east. A UN-brokered truce in April 2022 largely stopped the front lines moving, even after it formally expired. Reuters, carried by Al-Monitor, now calls it a "long-paused civil war" that has "reignited".
Why the strait matters. Bab al-Mandeb lies between Yemen and Djibouti. Ships heading to or from the Suez Canal pass through it. From late 2023 the Houthis attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea and said they were acting over the war in Gaza. Shipping companies rerouted around Africa. Reuters now describes a wider "U.S.-Iran war" that has already cut traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, so for the moment the Red Sea is the other main route for Gulf trade.
The actors. - The Houthis are aligned with Iran. - Yemen's recognised government and its forces are backed by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia. - The United States and European navies have escorted ships in the Red Sea. - UN agencies run aid in one of the world's largest humanitarian emergencies.
What is at stake. If the Houthis hold the heights above the strait, they can threaten a second chokepoint while Hormuz is already constrained. Families who were driven from their homes years ago are being displaced for a second time, some into Djibouti.
Where it stands. The reports place the advance in Lahj and Taiz provinces. They do not show the strait itself changing hands.
What is being argued about
- Whether the Houthis have taken the strait, or only the ridges above it
- Two displacement totals, 112,000 and 115,000, from different aid sources
- Who fired on the displacement camps — no report says
- Whether Washington will rely on Houthi assurances or Europe will send more ships
