Israeli army says the Khan Younis strike killed two more Hamas leaders; the Qassam statement names only al-Yazouri

The Israeli army and the Qassam Brigades both say Israel killed Mohammed al-Yazouri. According to An-Nahar, the army says two more Hamas leaders died with him. None of the five reports we hold names them.

What both sides say. The Israeli army says it killed Mohammed Abdel Salam al-Yazouri, commander of Hamas's Khan Younis brigade, on Thursday evening. An-Nahar, The Jerusalem Post and Al-Modon carry the army's claim. The Qassam Brigades say Israel killed him, in a statement carried by An-Nahar and IRNA. An-Nahar says the statement credits him with a leading role in planning the 7 October 2023 attack.

One death, three verbs. Two headlines say killed. Two say assassinated. IRNA's says martyrdom, "at the hands of the occupiers". Both of our readings of the coverage found the same split.

The ceasefire. Only An-Nahar mentions it. It says the bombing goes on "despite US efforts to save a ceasefire declared last year".

What is not settled - Who the two other dead were. We also do not know if Al-Modon's two dead are the same people. - Whether anyone was in the flat that caught fire. - The day. An-Nahar says Thursday evening, while a Jerusalem Post photo caption says 11 September, a Friday. - None of the five reports is from a Palestinian outlet or from inside Gaza.

What this is about. Israel's army killed a senior Hamas commander in southern Gaza during a ceasefire that is supposed to have ended the war there.

How it got here. - Gaza is a narrow strip of Palestine on the Mediterranean, bordering Israel and Egypt. Israel occupied it in 1967. It withdrew its settlers and soldiers in 2005. - Hamas, an Islamist movement, won Palestinian legislative elections in 2006. It took full control of Gaza in 2007 after fighting its rival Fatah. Israel and Egypt then tightened a blockade on the strip. - On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led fighters attacked southern Israel, killed people and took hostages back to Gaza. Israel answered with what Asharq Al-Awsat calls a "two-year military assault" on the strip. - A ceasefire took effect in October 2025, backed by the United States. Its first stage exchanged hostages for Palestinian prisoners and pulled Israeli troops back. Later stages, including Hamas's disarmament and who governs Gaza, were left unresolved. - Israeli strikes went on during the truce. Israel says it is hitting militants who threaten it or break the terms. Hamas says the strikes are themselves the breach. Each side blames the other.

The actors. - The Israeli army carried out the strike. Israel says Hamas commanders are legitimate targets until the group is disarmed. - The Qassam Brigades are Hamas's armed wing. Their statement confirmed al-Yazouri's death and, according to An-Nahar, credited him with a leading role in planning the 7 October attack. - Khan Younis is the main city in southern Gaza. The Qassam Brigades organise their fighters there as a brigade, and al-Yazouri led it. - The United States brokered the ceasefire. Both An-Nahar and Asharq Al-Awsat say it is working to save it.

What is at stake. Whether the truce holds. The killing of a senior commander tests how far either side will go before the ceasefire breaks down. If it collapses, full-scale war in Gaza could resume.

Where it stands. The reports we hold say the strike came on a Thursday evening and that the US effort to keep the ceasefire going continues. None of them carries a response from Hamas's political leaders or from Washington.
