Israeli papers name the man the army says it killed; Al-Modon reports 'martyrs' in 'violations' and names no one

Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post report two men killed in Gaza strikes on Sunday, both identified by the Israeli military. Al-Modon calls the strikes ceasefire violations. No report we hold names any other Palestinian dead or gives a death toll.

What the army's account says. Haaretz reports that Saher Nidal Latfi Saqr, who it says drove the motorcycle that carried Noa Argamani and Avinatan Or from the Nova festival, was killed in the Nuseirat area. The Jerusalem Post says the army and Shin Bet announced a second killing: Muhammad Hamad Muhammad Gabain, who they say was a Hamas military-wing commander involved in holding nine hostages.

What the Gaza side gets. Haaretz carries one line: Palestinian media reported three people wounded in Israeli strikes in Gaza City early on Sunday. Al-Modon's headline reports "martyrs and wounded in Gaza with escalating Israeli violations". We hold its headline only.

Haaretz Jerusalem Post Al-Modon
Who is named Saqr Gabain no one
Word for the dead "terrorist" "terrorist" "martyrs"
Who acts in the headline the army: "IDF kills" no one: "killed in weekend strikes" Israel: "Israeli violations"
Palestinian casualties 3 wounded, per Palestinian media none given dead and wounded, no number
The ceasefire not mentioned not mentioned "violations"

What is not settled.

  • Both named killings rest on one source: the Israeli military's announcement. No report we hold confirms either.
  • No report gives a death toll for Sunday.
  • No report names a Palestinian killed or wounded, other than the two men the army named.
  • No report quotes anyone in Gaza, and we hold no Palestinian outlet on these strikes.

What this is about. Israeli strikes in Gaza on Sunday 27 September 2026, carried out while a ceasefire is in force, and how differently Israeli and Arab outlets reported them.

How it got here. On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led fighters crossed from Gaza into southern Israel. They attacked towns, army posts and the Nova music festival, and took hostages back into Gaza. Noa Argamani was one of them; video of her being carried off on a motorcycle became one of the best-known images of that day. Israel then went to war in Gaza. Its government said the aims were to destroy Hamas and bring the hostages home. Israeli forces freed Argamani in June 2024 in an operation in Nuseirat, a refugee camp in central Gaza. A ceasefire later halted the main fighting. Israeli strikes have gone on under it, and Arab outlets call them violations of its terms.

Who the actors are.

  • The Israeli military and Shin Bet, Israel's internal security service. They announce whom they have killed and why. That announcement is often the only public account of a strike.
  • Hamas has governed Gaza since 2007. Its military wing held many of the hostages.
  • Gaza's Health Ministry, run under the Hamas administration, keeps the Palestinian count of the dead. UN agencies generally cite it; Israel disputes it.
  • The outlets. Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post are Israeli dailies. Al-Modon is a Lebanese news site.

What is at stake. Whether a strike on a named man is the enforcement of a ceasefire or a breach of it. That question shapes whether the truce holds. The answer depends on whose account a reader is given.

Where it stands. Two men are named as killed, both from the army's account. Palestinian media, cited by Haaretz, report three wounded in Gaza City. No death toll is reported.

What is being argued about

  • Two men named as killed, both on the Israeli military's word
  • Three wounded in Gaza City, reported by Palestinian media and carried in one line
  • 'Terrorist' in the Israeli headlines, 'martyrs' in the Arabic one
  • Only one report treats the strikes as a ceasefire question

Named when the army claims them, uncounted otherwise

The two reports built on the Israeli announcement name two dead men and their alleged roles, sourced only to the army and Shin Bet. The report that uses 'martyrs' names no one and gives no number. The only mention of the ceasefire is the word 'violations', in one headline.

2 dead men named, from the army's account 0 wounded Palestinians named 1 reports mentioning the ceasefire 0 reports quoting anyone in Gaza
