Israel's army says it hit Hezbollah 'terror infrastructure'; An-Nahar says Mansouri's school and homes are being blown up
An explosive device wounded two Israeli soldiers inside the strip Israel holds in south Lebanon on 19 September. The army's account of that day and An-Nahar's account from the village of Mansouri describe the same ground as two different things: a ceasefire being enforced, and a village being cleared. Neither account mentions the other.
The army's account. Three reports carry one statement from the Israeli army: an explosive device hit an engineering vehicle, two soldiers were hurt, and the army struck back. JNS and LBCI carry it as the army's claim. Ynet uses the army's term, 'terror infrastructure of Hezbollah', in its own narration. None of the three names the soldiers, a village, or a Lebanese source.
The ground account. An-Nahar reports from Mansouri, a village near the coast. It says Israeli forces are blowing up homes, shops and schools and bulldozing water, power and phone lines. It says the village's three-storey state school was 'removed from its place' by a large detonation and an air strike. It names one resident, Jaafar Mdeihli, whose home and his sons' homes were destroyed. It gives no Israeli account.
| Army-sourced reports (3) | An-Nahar (1) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who acts | the army, 'in response' | Israeli forces, stated flat |
| Target | 'Hezbollah terror infrastructure' | a school, homes, shops |
| People named | none | 1 resident |
| Soldiers' injuries | 'hurt' (JNS), 'lightly' (Ynet) | not covered |
What is not settled - Who planted the device. None of the reports we hold names anyone. - What the strikes hit. Lebanon's national news agency, carried by LBCI, reports 'two detonations in Markaba and Talousa' and names no one as setting them off. - Whether Mansouri is inside the zone the army refers to. No report says. - We hold no account from Hezbollah, the Lebanese army or UNIFIL.
What this is about. Israeli troops are holding ground inside south Lebanon. This story is about one day there, and about two ways of describing that presence.
How it got here. Hezbollah is an armed Shia movement and political party in Lebanon, founded in the 1980s during Israel's occupation of the south. Israel withdrew in 2000. The two fought a war in 2006, which ended with UN Security Council Resolution 1701. That resolution calls for no armed groups other than the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers (UNIFIL) south of the Litani river. On 8 October 2023, the day after Hamas attacked Israel, Hezbollah began firing into northern Israel in support of Gaza. Israel fired back, and people on both sides of the border fled their homes. In autumn 2024 Israel escalated sharply and sent ground troops into Lebanon. A ceasefire brokered by the United States and France took effect on 27 November 2024. Under it, Israeli forces were to withdraw, Hezbollah was to pull back north of the Litani, and the Lebanese army was to deploy in the south. Israel kept troops at points inside Lebanon and kept up strikes. Each side accused the other of breaking the deal.
The actors. The Israeli army says it is acting under 'the ceasefire agreement with Beirut' in what it calls a security zone. Hezbollah is the force Israel says it is targeting. Lebanon's government and army are responsible for the south under the ceasefire. Villagers like Mansouri's residents have been displaced, and An-Nahar says they left again in early August.
What is at stake. The question is whether villagers can go home, or whether a strip of south Lebanon is emptied and held.
Where it stands. Israeli forces are operating inside Lebanon. The reports we hold do not say how far the zone extends or for how long.
What is being argued about
- What the Israeli presence in south Lebanon is: ceasefire enforcement or the clearing of villages
- What the army's retaliatory strikes hit, and where
- The demolition of Mansouri's school and homes
- Who planted the device that wounded two soldiers
