Israel's defence minister calls it a 'jihadist terror attack'; flydubai calls it an 'altercation' and says motives are unknown
A flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv landed in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on 30 September after a fight in the cockpit. The reports agree that a pilot was stabbed. They do not agree on what the event was, which pilot attacked which, or how many people were aboard.
What is agreed. Flight FZ1073, Dubai to Tel Aviv, turned off course and landed in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. flydubai said so in statements carried by Asharq Al-Awsat and LBCI. Passengers told Haaretz and The Jerusalem Post that Israeli passengers helped overpower one of the two men at the controls.
What it is called.
| Who | Their word |
|---|---|
| Defence minister Israel Katz, via Haaretz, Ynet and LBCI | an attempted "jihadist terror attack" |
| flydubai, via LBCI | "مشادة" (an altercation); "too early" to know the motives |
| Netanyahu's office, via Reuters in Asharq Al-Awsat | denied the plane was hijacked |
| Netanyahu, via LBCI | one pilot stabbed the other, then "apparently" tried to bring the plane down |
| Shargh | accounts range from hijacking to a pilot's suicide; none officially confirmed |
Who attacked whom. The Jerusalem Post and Netanyahu say the pilot stabbed his co-pilot. AFP, via LBCI, says the co-pilot attacked the pilot. Arutz Sheva cites an initial investigation. It says the Emirati pilot hit the co-pilot with the cockpit's emergency axe to stop him.
How many were aboard. Over 100 Israelis (The Jerusalem Post). 150 Israelis (Arutz Sheva). 180 people (a passenger quoted in a Haaretz headline).
Not settled - The motive. Only Katz calls it terror, citing preliminary information. - Who held the blade, and who was defending himself. - Whether anyone was hurt. flydubai says all crew are safe. Saudi authorities, via Shargh, say the pilot and co-pilot went to hospital.
What this is about. Two pilots fought on a passenger jet flying from the United Arab Emirates to Israel. The dispute is over whether it was a terror attack.
How it got here. Israel and the UAE had no diplomatic relations until the Abraham Accords, signed in Washington in September 2020. Direct flights followed. A Jerusalem Post photo caption says flydubai's first scheduled flight landed at Ben Gurion airport on 26 November 2020. Saudi Arabia has never recognised Israel. In 2022 it opened its airspace to flights to and from Israel, which is why a Dubai–Tel Aviv jet crosses Saudi territory. The flight came three years into the war that began with the Hamas-led attack on Israel of 7 October 2023 and Israel's offensive in Gaza that followed.
The actors. - flydubai is a budget airline owned by the Dubai government. It flies to Israel under an agreement with Israel. - Benjamin Netanyahu is Israel's prime minister. Israel Katz is its defence minister. Miri Regev is its transport minister and regulates foreign airlines that fly into Israel. - Saudi Arabia controls the airport where the plane landed. By Netanyahu's account, it is holding and questioning the pilot. - The UAE has been Israel's closest Gulf partner since 2020.
What is at stake. If the Israeli government's terror account holds, Gulf airlines flying to Israel face new security rules. The Jerusalem Post says flydubai's agreement requires its pilots to come from countries that have ties with Israel. It cites sources who say the pilot has an Omani background. Oman has no relations with Israel. If flydubai's 'altercation' account holds, the case is about crew safety, for investigators in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Where it stands. flydubai says an official investigation is under way. Regev has moved against the airline's Israel flights. The Jerusalem Post says she ordered them halted; Shargh says she called for them to be suspended.
What is being argued about
- Terror attack, hijacking, suicide attempt or altercation
- Which pilot stabbed which
- Whether flydubai may keep flying to Israel
- Saudi Arabia's role in the landing and the passengers' return
