Jerusalem Post: intelligence shows Hamas plotting 7 October attacks; IRNA: Netanyahu's warning is election propaganda
Israel's defence minister put the army on high alert before the anniversary. He said Gaza's population would pay 'beyond all proportion' if troops were hurt. Netanyahu said Hamas may attack to sway the 27 October election. Every account of what Hamas intends comes from Israeli officials. We hold no reply from Hamas or from anyone in Gaza.
The warning. On Tuesday, Defence Minister Israel Katz's office said the army was on high alert "in light of intelligence regarding Hamas's intentions" to attack Israeli forces in Gaza on 7 October. Asharq Al-Awsat and An-Nahar report the statement. Netanyahu told the cabinet that Hamas may attack before the 27 October election "to influence" it.
The threat to civilians. Katz's statement said "the ones who will pay the heavy price will be Hamas and the population of Gaza -- beyond all proportion". 3 of 6 reports carry that line.
Four frames across six reports.
| Outlet | Frame | Who it attributes the claim to |
|---|---|---|
| Jerusalem Post | Hamas "plotting" attacks | Israeli intelligence, at the end of the headline |
| Asharq Al-Awsat, An-Nahar | army put on alert | Katz's office, quoted |
| JNS, Arutz Sheva | Netanyahu: "We are ready" | Netanyahu, quoted |
| IRNA | election propaganda | no one; stated as fact |
The dead. Only An-Nahar gives tolls, through AFP. Official Israeli figures count 1,221 killed in the 2023 attack. Gaza's health ministry counts at least 74,200 killed in Gaza since then, 1,460 of them since the ceasefire. Both are party figures.
What is not settled - Whether Hamas plans anything. Three reports quote one statement from Katz's office. None gives independent evidence. - Hamas's answer. Asharq Al-Awsat's text breaks off just after naming Hamas. No other report carries a reply. - No Palestinian outlet is among the six reports. We could not read WAFA, Ma'an or Palestine TV on this.
This story asks whether an Israeli warning of Hamas attacks in Gaza is a security alert or an election message.
How it got here. Hamas is the Islamist movement that has governed Gaza since 2007. On 7 October 2023 it led an attack on southern Israel. Official Israeli figures compiled by AFP count 1,221 people killed, and 251 hostages were taken into Gaza, An-Nahar reports. Israel answered with a long military campaign in Gaza. Gaza's health ministry, which Hamas runs, counts at least 74,200 people killed, according to An-Nahar. The United Nations treats the ministry's figures as reliable. A ceasefire was announced in October 2025, but Israeli troops are still inside Gaza. The health ministry says Israeli forces have killed 1,460 people there since the ceasefire.
Who is involved. - Benjamin Netanyahu is Israel's prime minister. He faces a general election on 27 October 2026. - Israel Katz is his defence minister and directs the army. - Hamas still has armed forces in Gaza. The warning concerns attacks on Israeli troops there. - Gaza's civilians are named in Katz's threat alongside Hamas. - Iran backs Hamas and is Israel's main regional enemy. IRNA is Iran's state news agency.
What is at stake. Katz has promised that if Hamas attacks on the anniversary, Gaza's population will pay as well as Hamas. A response like that would test a ceasefire that has not stopped the killing. If no attack comes, critics will be able to call the warning campaigning, as IRNA already does.
Where it stands. The army is on high alert for 7 October. None of the reports we hold describes an attack, and none carries a public answer from Hamas.
What is being argued about
- Is the warning intelligence or electioneering?
- Katz's threat names Gaza's population, not only Hamas
- No reply from Hamas or anyone in Gaza in the reports we hold
- Only one report gives the death toll on either side
