Jerusalem Post: Iran led Netanyahu's UAE talks. Haaretz: he asked for a denial. Shargh: a 'cover-up'
Four outlets give three purposes for one six-hour visit to Abu Dhabi. Behind the visit are two reported warnings before 7 October, one from the UAE and one from Egypt. Netanyahu denies the Egyptian one. No named person confirms either warning.
The trip. Netanyahu spent six hours in Abu Dhabi with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed, Shargh reports, citing informed sources. It says the Mossad chief and the head of the National Security Council went with him. The outlets disagree on what the trip was for.
| Outlet | What the trip was for | How it says so |
|---|---|---|
| Jerusalem Post | Iran first; a denial second | "reportedly requested" |
| Haaretz | A denial of Haaretz's own report | "sources say" |
| Al-Modon | A denial of a warning | "Israeli media revealed" |
| Shargh | To "cover up" the facts | stated as fact |
The Egyptian warning. Ynet says the Wall Street Journal reported that Egypt's intelligence chief warned Netanyahu. Shargh, citing Fars, says the warning came 48 hours before the attack. Arutz Sheva reports that Netanyahu denies meeting or speaking with Abbas Kamel and has told his lawyers to sue for defamation. Ynet says he called the reports a "vile and lying campaign" and blamed former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar. Ynet also reports Gadi Eisenkot's charge that the prime minister's office ignored warnings.
One insider. A former Mossad official, Cohen, told the Jerusalem Post he does not recall any report of a warning from the UAE leader, or a visit by Kamel. He does not deny it. He says he does not remember it.
Not settled. We do not know whether either warning was given. We do not know what was said in Abu Dhabi, because the UAE Foreign Ministry declined to comment. No named person confirms the request for a denial. We could not read the Wall Street Journal report itself.
This story asks whether Arab governments warned Israel's prime minister before the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023, and what he did once that was reported.
How it got here. On 7 October 2023 Hamas fighters crossed from Gaza into southern Israel. It was the deadliest day in Israel's history, and it started the war in Gaza. Since then Israelis have argued over who failed to see it coming: the army, the Shin Bet security service or the government. Benjamin Netanyahu has led the government the whole time. He has blamed the security chiefs. They and his political rivals have blamed him.
The actors. - Netanyahu is prime minister and faces an election. Shargh and Ynet both set the warnings against that vote. - Egypt borders Gaza and has long carried messages to and from Hamas. Abbas Kamel was its intelligence chief in 2023. - The UAE opened formal ties with Israel under the 2020 Abraham Accords. Mohamed bin Zayed (MBZ) is its president. Haaretz reports that its Foreign Ministry says it shares "all relevant intelligence" with Israel. - Ronen Bar was head of the Shin Bet on 7 October. - Gadi Eisenkot is a former army chief of staff. Haaretz reports that he now leads the Yashar party and is campaigning against Netanyahu over the warnings.
What is at stake. If a foreign government warned Netanyahu and he did not act, the failure reaches his own office. If the reports are wrong, he has grounds for a defamation case and for his charge that the security services failed. Either way, it comes shortly before voters decide.
Where it stands. Two warnings have been reported, one from the UAE and one from Egypt. No one has confirmed either on the record. Netanyahu denies the Egyptian one. The UAE has not commented.
What is being argued about
- What Netanyahu's six-hour visit to Abu Dhabi was for
- Whether Egypt's intelligence chief warned him before 7 October
- Whether the UAE warned him, and whether he asked it to deny that
- Who is to blame: Netanyahu, or the former Shin Bet chief
