Jerusalem Post leads with a wounded Border Police officer; Haaretz with Palestinians beaten by Haredi youths

Two Israeli papers report the same night in Jerusalem. Both give 11 arrests. Only Haaretz says who was beaten, and that police did not say whether the attackers were among those held.

Same night, different victim. A riot followed a Haredi religious gathering in Jerusalem overnight, Haaretz reports. The Jerusalem Post leads with police harm. Haaretz leads with Palestinians beaten near the Old City.

The Jerusalem Post Haaretz
Headline leads with 11 arrests, Border Police injuries Haredi youths filmed beating Palestinians
Who acted "rioters", group not named "Haredi youths"
Who was harmed a Border Police officer and "another person", lightly wounded Palestinians, beaten
The others in the fight "local residents" Palestinians
Arrests 11 11, from police

One figure, one source. Both papers give 11 arrests. Haaretz attributes the number to police. Neither paper gives a second, independent count.

What only one paper carries. The Jerusalem Post alone reports stones thrown, municipal vehicles damaged and two people lightly wounded. Haaretz alone reports the beating, and that it was filmed.

What is not settled - Whether the men who beat the Palestinians were among the 11 arrested. Police did not say, Haaretz reports. - How many Palestinians were beaten, or how badly. Neither paper gives a number. - Whether the Jerusalem Post's "local residents" are the Palestinians Haaretz describes. The Jerusalem Post does not say. - We hold no Palestinian outlet's report of the night, and no account from the people beaten.

What this is about. A night of violence in Jerusalem, and whether it is told as a police story or as a story about Palestinians who were attacked.

How it got here. Israel captured East Jerusalem, including the walled Old City, from Jordan in the 1967 war. It later annexed it and calls the whole city its capital. Most of the world does not recognise that annexation, and treats East Jerusalem as occupied Palestinian land. Palestinians want it as the capital of their own state. The Old City holds sites sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians, and Jewish and Palestinian residents live close together around it. Clashes between young Jewish Israelis and Palestinians there have recurred for years. How police handle them is its own long-running argument.

Who is involved. - Haredi Jews: ultra-Orthodox communities, a large and growing share of Jerusalem's Jewish population. Haaretz says the riot began at a Haredi religious gathering. - Palestinians in and around the Old City. Haaretz reports that some were beaten. - Israel Police and its Border Police, a paramilitary branch deployed widely in Jerusalem. Police gave the arrest figure that both papers carry. - Two Israeli papers. The Jerusalem Post and Haaretz both publish in English from Israel.

What is at stake. Who gets arrested and charged, and whether an attack on Palestinians is recorded as one. If a riot is described only as a fight with police, the people who were beaten drop out of the record.

Where it stands. Police say 11 people were arrested. Haaretz reports that they have not said whether the Palestinians' attackers were among them. We hold no charges and no names.

What is being argued about

  • Who was harmed: a police officer, or Palestinians
  • Whether the attackers were among the 11 arrested
  • "Local residents" versus "Palestinians"
  • A beating on film that only one paper reports

One night, two different victims

Both reports give the same figure: 11 arrests. One leads with a police officer wounded and never says who the rioters were or who they attacked. The other names Haredi youths as the attackers and Palestinians as the people beaten, and says the police did not say whether the attackers were among those held.

Claims and verdicts

unverified Police arrested 11 people after the overnight riot in Jerusalem.
The Jerusalem Post and Haaretz both give 11 arrests, but both take it from the same police statement, so it is one account. Haaretz adds that police did not say whether the men who beat the Palestinians were among those arrested.
