Jerusalem Post leads with Otzma Yehudit cleared; Haaretz leads with 'only Arab parties disqualified'
Israel's Central Elections Committee barred both Arab slates and two Arab-party candidates from October's election. It kept Ben-Gvir's and Smotrich's parties on the ballot. The outlets agree on the outcome but not on which half is the news. Only Haaretz says the Otzma Yehudit vote was close.
What happened. Haaretz's editorial says the committee voted on Wednesday to bar the Joint List, Mansour Abbas' United Arab List, Balad chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh and Hadash MK Ofer Cassif. On Thursday the committee rejected petitions against Otzma Yehudit, Religious Zionism and Zehut, according to The Jerusalem Post, Haaretz and Al-Modon.
Which half leads.
| Outlet | Headline leads with | Its own words |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | Far right cleared | "clears Otzma Yehudit ... after barring Arab slates day earlier" |
| Haaretz (news) | Arab parties barred | "only Arab parties disqualified" |
| Haaretz (opinion, 3 pieces) | The Arab bans | "a permanent ritual"; "politically driven" |
| Al-Modon | Far right cleared | refuses to strike off "the parties of Ben-Gvir and Smotrich" |
How the charges are put. The Jerusalem Post says the petitions "alleged" that Otzma Yehudit denied Israel's democratic character and incited racism. A Haaretz opinion piece says Ben-Gvir's party "may come closer" to the legal bar than Abu Shehadeh, "but they are Jewish".
Who is not heard. None of the 8 reports quotes a barred Arab candidate. None quotes a committee member explaining a vote.
Not settled - How close the Otzma Yehudit vote was. Haaretz alone says the party "narrowly escaped" a vote and gives no count. No report gives a count for any vote. - Whether the barred slates will appeal. No report we hold says. - Why each member voted as they did.
What this is about. The body that runs Israel's elections has struck the Arab parties off the ballot for October's Knesset vote. It kept on two far-right parties that sit in the government.
How it got here. Israel elects its 120-seat parliament, the Knesset, from national party lists. The last election was in November 2022 and the term runs four years, so a vote was due by autumn 2026. Section 7A of Basic Law: The Knesset lets a list or candidate be barred on three grounds: - denying Israel's existence as a Jewish and democratic state - incitement to racism - supporting armed struggle against Israel
The law was used in 1988 to bar Kach, the movement of Rabbi Meir Kahane.
A Supreme Court justice chairs the Central Elections Committee, but the parties in the Knesset appoint most of its members. It votes on petitions, which rival parties usually file. Its bans on Arab parties and candidates have come before the Supreme Court in several past elections, and the court has overturned most of them.
The actors. - The Arab slates. Most votes for the Joint List and the United Arab List (Ra'am) come from Palestinian citizens of Israel, who are about a fifth of the population. Balad and Hadash are Arab-led parties. Ofer Cassif is a Jewish MK for Hadash. - Otzma Yehudit is led by Itamar Ben-Gvir, the national security minister. Ben-Gvir was once a Kach activist. - Religious Zionism is led by Bezalel Smotrich, the finance minister. It runs jointly with Zehut.
What is at stake. If the bans stand, the parties most Arab citizens vote for are not on the ballot. That changes who sits in the next Knesset, and whether many Arab citizens vote at all.
Where it stands. The committee has ruled. The reports we hold do not say whether anyone has appealed.
What is being argued about
- Which half of the ruling is the news: the Arab bans or the far-right clearances
- Whether the Otzma Yehudit vote was close: Haaretz says so but gives no count
- Whether the Arab bans are the law applied or, in Haaretz's editorial, 'a permanent ritual'
- No report quotes a barred candidate or a committee member
