Jerusalem Post reports "first shuttle talks in months"; LBCI quotes Tehran saying "there will be no negotiations"
Four of the six reports we hold describe US and Iranian envoys passing messages through Qatari mediators in New York. One, published between them, quotes the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council saying the Strait of Hormuz stays shut and there are no talks.
The contact. The Jerusalem Post reports that Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi and the US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner communicated through mediators at the UN General Assembly in New York. An-Nahar carries the same contact, calls it "the first meeting (albeit indirect)" since June, names Qatar as the mediator, and quotes Trump calling it good and productive.
The denial. Two minutes after An-Nahar published, LBCI ran the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council saying that unless Iran's conditions are met "we will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz and there will be no negotiations". The Jerusalem Post's "hope for progress" headline followed an hour and a half later.
| Report | On whether talks exist |
|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | "first shuttle talks in months"; nobody in the body is quoted hoping |
| An-Nahar | "the first meeting (albeit indirect)" since June, by Qatari mediation |
| Al-Modon | Tehran passed its conditions to Washington, per Iran's foreign ministry |
| LBCI | Iran's security council secretary: no reopening, no negotiations |
One speech, two words for it. Two reports quote Trump offering Iran annihilation or a deal. UN News renders the same alternative as "far more drastic steps" and does not carry the harsher word at all. The choice decides whether the reader meets a threat or a bargaining position.
Not settled. Whether the contact is a negotiation. No report we hold reconciles the two accounts, and none carries a Qatari account. An-Nahar's one-week offer to reopen the strait rests on a single unnamed Iranian official, and that report notes media close to the Revolutionary Guard denied any change in Iran's demands.
What this is about. The United States and Iran are at war, and the question this week is whether the two governments have begun talking again.
How it got here. Iran's nuclear programme has been under international inspection for decades. The 2015 agreement between Iran and six world powers traded limits on that programme for relief from sanctions; the United States withdrew from it in 2018 and restored the sanctions. Tehran's alliances with armed movements in Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen and Palestine, and the region-wide escalation that followed the Gaza war begun in October 2023, brought Washington and Tehran into direct confrontation. The reports we hold do not say what triggered the current fighting. An-Nahar dates the war as close to completing its seventh month, describes it as having spread to Saudi Arabia and Yemen, and warns of a wider regional explosion and a new global oil shock. It dates the last contact between the two sides to June.
Who is in it. Donald Trump, the US president, addressed the General Assembly on Tuesday. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are his envoys. Abbas Araghchi is Iran's foreign minister; Esmaeil Baghaei speaks for its foreign ministry. Qatar, which keeps working relations with both governments, carries the messages: its prime minister and foreign minister met Araghchi in New York on 22 September.
What is at stake. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow sea lane at the mouth of the Gulf through which the oil of Iran and its Arab neighbours reaches the world. The reports treat it as shut, and Iran as the party that would reopen it. Against that Iran sets a naval blockade of its ports, an economic war and frozen assets — including, An-Nahar reports, sanctions on Iranian civil aviation from 23 September.
Where it stands. Messages have been passed. The two capitals describe the result differently, and the US midterm elections fall on 3 November.
What is being argued about
- Whether the New York contact amounts to negotiations
- Iran's conditions for returning to talks
- The Strait of Hormuz and the naval blockade
- How each report renders Trump's UN speech
