Jerusalem Post says a UAE official "denies" warning Netanyahu; Haaretz says the same official "did not outright deny" it
One unnamed Emirati official, one Abu Dhabi newspaper, three readings in a single day — a denial, something short of a denial, and a denial Israel is said to have pressed for.
The claim. Haaretz reported earlier this month that Mohammed bin Zayed warned Benjamin Netanyahu of a Hamas attack before 7 October 2023.
The answer. An unnamed Emirati official responded through The National, Abu Dhabi's English-language newspaper. All three reports we hold reach that statement through that one outlet. None of them names the official.
| Outlet | What it says the statement was |
|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | A denial — The National "described the statement as rejecting recent claims that a direct warning had been conveyed to Netanyahu" |
| Haaretz | Short of one — the official "did not outright deny" the report, and said such matters aren't discussed by state leaders |
| Al-Modon | A denial Israel pressed for, on the word of "a Hebrew report" it does not name |
Who owns the paper. The Jerusalem Post calls The National state-owned. Haaretz says it is "owned by the president's brother". The two do not contradict each other.
Not settled. Whether any warning was passed: no report we hold establishes it either way. Whether the statement was a denial: one statement, two opposite readings, published three hours apart. Whether Israel pressed for it: one report says so, sourcing it to a report it does not name. And no report we hold carries a response from Netanyahu's office, or a word from any Emirati official speaking under their own name.
What this is about. Whether the president of the United Arab Emirates privately told Israel's prime minister that a Hamas attack was coming — and whether Abu Dhabi has now denied it.
How it got here. On 7 October 2023 Hamas led an attack on southern Israel, and the war in Gaza followed. What Israel's government knew or was told beforehand has been fought over inside Israel ever since; it is the central domestic question about that morning. Three years earlier, in September 2020, the UAE became the first Gulf state to establish formal relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords. Mohammed bin Zayed, then crown prince of Abu Dhabi, drove that decision; he became the UAE's president in May 2022. Those relations have held through the war. Earlier this month Haaretz reported that he had warned Netanyahu in advance. Today an Emirati official answered — through one newspaper, without a name.
Who is in it. Mohammed bin Zayed, as the man said to have passed the warning. Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, as the man said to have received it. The National, which carried the response: The Jerusalem Post describes it as Abu Dhabi's state-owned English-language paper, and Haaretz says it is owned by the president's brother — which is why both reports tell readers who owns it before quoting it. Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post are Israeli; Al-Modon is Lebanese.
What is at stake. If a warning was passed, it becomes part of the Israeli argument over what was known before 7 October. If none was, a significant report is wrong. For Abu Dhabi, both readings cost something: confirming places it inside Israel's intelligence picture, and denying invites the charge that it was leaned on.
Where it stands. One statement, no named source, no Israeli government reply in anything we hold.
What is being argued about
- Whether Mohammed bin Zayed warned Netanyahu of a coming attack before 7 October 2023
- Whether the Emirati official's statement was a denial at all
- Whether Israel pressed Abu Dhabi to issue it
- Who owns the newspaper that carried the statement
