Jerusalem Post says 'car-ramming terror attack'; An-Nahar says 'a Palestinian attack' at a checkpoint near Beit Horon
Neria Leiter is a soldier and the son of Israel's ambassador to Washington. He is in serious condition after an attack west of Ramallah. The two reports we hold call the attack different things. Neither names the attacker or says what happened to them.
The wounded man. Both reports name Neria Leiter, son of Yechiel Leiter, Israel's ambassador to the United States. The Jerusalem Post reports that his father said his condition had stabilised but his life was "still in danger". Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem lists him in serious condition after several surgeries. An-Nahar says he is 39 and had several hours of brain surgery overnight.
Two names for one attack.
| The Jerusalem Post | An-Nahar | |
|---|---|---|
| What it calls it | "car-ramming terror attack" (headline, own voice) | "a Palestinian attack" |
| Where | not given | military checkpoint near Beit Ur al-Tahta and the Beit Horon settlement, west of Ramallah |
| Who was hit | Neria Leiter | a police vehicle carrying a policewoman and Leiter's soldier son |
| The attacker | not named | not named |
Only The Jerusalem Post says car-ramming, so how the attack was carried out rests on one report. Only An-Nahar gives the place and the vehicle.
The ambassador and Macron. An-Nahar reports that Leiter said French President Emmanuel Macron was driven by "ignorance, malice or wickedness". Macron had spoken at the UN about settler violence in the West Bank. An-Nahar quotes no reply from Macron.
What is not settled - Who the attacker was, and what happened to them. - How the attack was carried out. - How the policewoman is. - What Palestinians say about it. Neither report quotes a Palestinian, and we hold no report from a Palestinian outlet.
What this is about. An Israeli soldier was badly wounded in an attack in the occupied West Bank. He is the son of Israel's ambassador in Washington. His father then attacked the French president over a speech at the UN.
How it got here. Israel has occupied the West Bank since the 1967 war. The Oslo Accords of the 1990s created the Palestinian Authority. It has limited self-rule in parts of the territory. Israel keeps overall security control and runs military checkpoints on the roads. Israel has built settlements across the West Bank since 1967. Most states and the UN regard them as illegal under international law. Israel disputes that. Beit Horon is one of those settlements. Beit Ur al-Tahta is a Palestinian village beside it, west of Ramallah.
On 7 October 2023 Hamas attacked Israel from Gaza, and Israel went to war in Gaza. An-Nahar reports that one of the ambassador's sons was killed in that war in November. The West Bank has seen violence throughout the war: army raids, attacks by Palestinians and attacks by settlers.
The actors. Yechiel Leiter is Israel's ambassador to the United States. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government appointed him. An-Nahar notes that he was born in the US and moved to a settlement in the West Bank. Emmanuel Macron is president of France. France recognised the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September 2025. An-Nahar reports that Macron led other Western states to do the same, and that relations between Macron and Netanyahu are strained.
What is at stake. Macron's UN speech was about violence by settlers. Leiter answered by pointing to attacks on settlers and on his son. The argument is now over which violence in the West Bank the world should be talking about.
Where it stands. Neria Leiter is in serious condition in a Jerusalem hospital. No report we hold names the attacker.
What is being argued about
- What to call the attack: 'terror' or 'Palestinian'
- Where it happened and who was in the vehicle
- Neria Leiter's condition after surgery
- Leiter's charge that Macron acted from 'ignorance, malice or wickedness'
