Jerusalem Post says Netanyahu was warned ten days before 7 October, Arutz Sheva says over a week — his adviser tells Ynet "there was chaos"
Five Israeli reports in six hours, six weeks before an election. Four rest on the accounts of his opponents. One carries his side, and it answers a different question.
The claim. The Jerusalem Post reports that the UAE president, Mohammed bin Zayed, warned Netanyahu ten days before 7 October that Yahya Sinwar was planning a major operation, and that Netanyahu was "said to have dismissed the warning". Arutz Sheva, on the same disclosure, says "over a week".
Where the accounts part.
| Report | What it says | Hedged? |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | Warned 10 days before; dismissed it | The dismissal only, as "said to have" |
| The Jerusalem Post | Bennett and Lapid say Egypt and the Shin Bet warned him too | No — the headline says they "confirm" |
| The Jerusalem Post | He refused a Shin Bet plan to kill Sinwar | No — stated flat, no source named |
| Arutz Sheva | Warned "over a week" before | Yes — attributed to four opposition figures |
| Ynet | On the day itself: "there was chaos" | No — his adviser, quoted directly |
One side, a different question. Ynet is the only report where Netanyahu's side speaks, through his senior adviser Topaz Luk — and Luk is defending the prime minister's conduct on the day of the attack, not his handling of the warnings before it.
Not settled. Nothing we hold is first-hand. No report carries Netanyahu's own words, a response from the UAE, or the warning's text or the channel it came through. The Shin Bet claim appears in one report and is neither confirmed nor contradicted elsewhere. No report names anyone killed on 7 October.
This story is about who knew what before 7 October 2023, and whether Israel's prime minister ignored warnings of the attack.
How it got here. - On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led fighters crossed from Gaza into southern Israel. They killed Israelis and took hostages back into Gaza. Israel went to war in Gaza the same day. - The attack was planned under Yahya Sinwar, Hamas's leader in Gaza at the time. Israeli forces killed him in Gaza in October 2024. - Since the attack, Israelis have argued over one question: who failed to see it coming? Army and intelligence chiefs have taken public responsibility. Benjamin Netanyahu, prime minister since December 2022, has not. - Israeli law provides for a state commission of inquiry, an independent panel whose members are named by the president of the Supreme Court. No such commission has been set up. Bennett and the head of the Israel Bar Association, Amit Becher, say Netanyahu has blocked one. - According to MK Chili Tropper, speaking to the Jerusalem Post, Netanyahu has spent the past week campaigning on the claim that security chiefs "didn't wake him up" on the night of the attack.
Who the actors are. - Netanyahu leads the governing coalition and faces an election within weeks. - Mohammed bin Zayed is president of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE opened formal ties with Israel in 2020 under the Abraham Accords. - The Shin Bet is Israel's domestic security service. Ronen Bar headed it on 7 October. - The opposition figures include two former prime ministers, Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid. Gadi Eisenkot is a former army chief. Avigdor Liberman is a former defence minister and Yair Golan leads the Democrats. All four of Bennett, Eisenkot, Liberman and Golan are running against Netanyahu.
What is at stake. If the warning was real and was not passed on, the failure reaches the prime minister and not only the security services. That shapes how voters judge him, and whether an independent inquiry is ever set up.
Where it stands. In the reports we hold, the opposition is demanding an investigation. None of them carries a response from Netanyahu himself or from the UAE.
What is being argued about
- How long before 7 October the warning is said to have reached Netanyahu — ten days, or over a week
- Whether Netanyahu passed the warning on to Israel's security chiefs
- A claim carried by one report only: that he refused a Shin Bet plan to strike Hamas's leadership
- Why Netanyahu and the chief of staff did not speak for hours on the day of the attack
