Jerusalem Post says 'terror hijacker', Haaretz says 'suspected hijacking attempt', and nobody can confirm an Iran link
A flydubai co-pilot attacked his captain on a flight to Israel on 30 September. Israeli outlets disagree on what to call it. A Jerusalem Post headline about Iran rests on an official who says he can neither confirm nor rule out a link.
What happened. A flydubai co-pilot "stabbed his captain with an emergency 'crash axe'", Reuters reports via Al-Monitor. It says the plane dropped 16,000 feet in 30 seconds before passengers and a stand-by crew brought it under control. Everyone on board survived. This is one account. No other report we hold gives the drop.
Four words for one event.
| Outlet | What it calls it | Hedged? |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | "terror hijacker", "terrorist co-pilot" | No |
| Ynet | "the pilot-terrorist from Oman" | No |
| Haaretz | "suspected hijacking attempt" | Yes |
| Al-Monitor (Reuters) | "what UAE prosecutors have called a terrorist attack" | Attributed |
4 of 8 reports give the label flat. 2 hedge it as suspected. 1 attributes it.
Iran. A Jerusalem Post headline says the Mossad "probes link to Iran". The Israeli official it quotes says there is "no information that can rule out or confirm" a link. No other report we hold names Iran.
Israel's own security. Ynet reports a closed Knesset committee hearing. It heard that 1,240 aircrew from states with no ties to Israel entered the country. The Jerusalem Post, citing Army Radio, says the Transportation Ministry turned down Shin Bet help. It also says the ministry never filled 10 posts it was funded for.
Not settled - Whether Iran had any role. No report we hold shows one. - The co-pilot's motive. Israeli officials told Reuters he planned the attack before joining the airline. We hold no detail. - Whether the ministry refused help. There is one account, from Army Radio. - The injured captain's name. No report gives it.
This story is about a co-pilot who attacked his captain in mid-flight on a Dubai-to-Israel service. It is also about what Israel knew about the people who fly its routes.
How it got here. Israel and the United Arab Emirates normalised relations in September 2020 under the Abraham Accords, which the United States brokered. Direct flights followed, and Dubai's airlines became a main link between Israel and the Gulf. Oman, a neighbouring Gulf state, has no formal diplomatic relations with Israel.
The Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 started the war in Gaza. That war strained these ties and widened into open conflict between Israel and Iran. The two countries struck each other directly in 2024 and fought a short war in June 2025. Israel accuses Iran of arming groups that fight it. Iran rejects Israel's existence as a state. That history is why Israeli outlets ask about Iran first.
On 30 September 2026, flydubai flight FZ1073 made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, a Jerusalem Post photo caption says. Its passengers were later flown on to Ben Gurion airport.
The actors. flydubai is a state-owned airline based in Dubai. UAE prosecutors are handling the case. In Israel, the Transportation Ministry under Miri Regev oversees aviation. The Shin Bet is the domestic security service, and the Mossad is the foreign intelligence agency. The Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee examines security questions in closed session.
What is at stake. flydubai has suspended its Israel flights. The Israeli government is weighing NIS 9 million in support, the Jerusalem Post reports. If foreign aircrew are a gap in Israel's security, every route from a country without ties to Israel comes into question. If Iran is shown to be involved, the attack becomes part of a wider conflict.
Where it stands. The co-pilot is being questioned. No report we hold establishes a motive or a sponsor.
What is being argued about
- Whether to call it a hijacking, a terror attack or a suspected attempt
- Whether Iran had any role: raised, not shown
- Foreign aircrew entering Israel, and a ministry that reportedly turned down Shin Bet help
- flydubai's suspension of Israel flights and help for the passengers
