Kallas says the EU's Red Sea mission is on alert; Italy's defence minister says only Italy and Greece are really helping
The Houthis are advancing along Yemen's Red Sea coast. The Jerusalem Post reports that the EU's naval mission, Aspides, has raised its alert level. An-Nahar quotes Italy's defence minister: Rome is preparing its own mission because it cannot wait for the EU.
Two reports, two pictures of the EU. The Jerusalem Post's headline says Aspides "raised alert level of its ships" and cites Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign-policy chief. The body of the report does not quote her. An-Nahar cites Reuters and leads with Italy's defence minister, Guido Crosetto.

What Crosetto says. Italy says it cannot wait for the EU to respond. It will not let what Crosetto called "European bureaucracy" hold it back. "We need more ships," he told Reuters. He would not say how many.
What both reports say. Both say the Houthis are taking more of the coast. An-Nahar adds that about 40% of Italy's trade passes through the Suez Canal. The figure comes from Assarmatori, a group representing Italian shipowners.
Who is not heard. Neither report quotes anyone in Yemen or any Houthi spokesperson.
What is not settled - How far Aspides raised its alert, and when. We hold no words from Kallas herself. - Whether any EU state besides Italy and Greece is sending ships. - What Italy will send. Rome has given no details.
What this is about. Who protects merchant ships at the southern mouth of the Red Sea: the EU acting together, or single governments acting alone.
How it got here. Yemen's civil war began when the Houthi movement took the capital, Sanaa, in 2014. A Saudi-led coalition stepped in on the side of the internationally recognised government in 2015. The Houthis still hold Sanaa and much of the west of the country. The war in Gaza began in October 2023. After that, the Houthis started attacking ships in the Red Sea and said they were acting in support of Palestinians. The United States and Britain struck Houthi targets from January 2024. The EU launched its own naval mission, Aspides, in 2024. Its job is defensive: it escorts and protects ships and does not strike Yemen.
Why the strait matters. Bab al-Mandab separates Yemen from the Horn of Africa. An-Nahar reports it is 29 km wide at its narrowest point. Ships from Asia pass through it to reach the Suez Canal and Europe. An-Nahar also reports that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is already down because of the US war on Iran. That leaves more weight on the Red Sea route.
The actors. - The Houthis hold most of Yemen's Red Sea coast. Many governments and outlets describe them as backed by Iran. - The EU runs Aspides. Its foreign-policy chief is Kaja Kallas. The mission has only the ships its member states choose to send. - Italy takes part in Aspides and is among the EU states that rely most on trade through Suez. - Greece is the only state Italy names as a real partner.
What is at stake. If the Houthis hold more of the coast, ships face more risk at the narrowest point. If EU states do not send ships, protecting them falls to single governments.
Where it stands. Italy says it is preparing a mission of its own. The EU mission is reported to be on higher alert. Neither has said what ships it will add.
