Katz says Israel holds Ali al-Taher, tunnels and all. A Hezbollah-bloc MP says the ridge is still being bombed.

Israel's defence minister said on Friday the army had taken the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon and cleared the tunnels beneath it. Hezbollah said nothing for more than twenty hours. Five reports differ on what happened, on whether the claim can be checked, and on what to call the men who were on the hill.

Israeli army has seized Lebanon's key Ali al-Taher ridge from Hezbollah - France 24
Israeli army has seized Lebanon's key Ali al-Taher ridge from Hezbollah - France 24 as published by France 24 · seen at France 24

What was announced. Katz said on Friday the army had taken the ridge from Hezbollah fighters. The Jerusalem Post carries him saying the tunnels beneath it were cleared. An-Nahar dates Netanyahu's claim of control, above ground and below, to 3 September.

Reported by What it says happened Whose account
France 24 (AFP) Israel "has seized" the ridge from Hezbollah fighters, per Katz Katz, plus the group's non-confirmation
The Jerusalem Post the army "cleared Hezbollah terrorists from tunnels under" it Katz alone
An-Nahar, news Hezbollah "admits evacuating" the hill; party-linked sources describe a gradual pullback both; observers could not "verify the Israeli narrative, or refute it"
An-Nahar, column the hill fell on 3 September, twenty years of tunnelling "into one sentence in an election statement" its own; unsourced reports of fighters dead of thirst underground
Shargh the control claim is still ambiguous an MP, "because the regime is still bombing there"

The two bias readings differ. Both find nobody named among the dead. One counts a third word for the men — martyrs; the other counts a report that gives the attacking army no name and calls it a regime.

What this does not settle. No report we hold carries a Hezbollah statement. None gives a number for the men in the tunnels, and none names one of the dead. None squares continued bombing with control, and An-Nahar says no picture of the hill or its tunnels has been broadcast.

What this is about. Whether Israel's army now holds a fortified hilltop in southern Lebanon, and what that changes in talks on Israel's withdrawal.

How it got here. - Hezbollah formed in the early 1980s, during Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon, with Iran's backing. It is a Shia political party with seats in Lebanon's parliament and an armed force outside the state army. - Israel occupied a strip of southern Lebanon until 2000. Hezbollah's fight against that occupation is the basis of its claim to be "the resistance". - Israel and Hezbollah fought a war in 2006. UN Security Council Resolution 1701 ended it and called for no armed forces south of the Litani river except Lebanon's army and UN peacekeepers. - On 8 October 2023, the day after Hamas's attacks on Israel, Hezbollah began firing on Israel in support of Gaza. Israel escalated in autumn 2024 with air strikes and a ground invasion. A ceasefire followed in November 2024. - The fighting did not end there. An-Nahar dates a second ceasefire to 15 June this year. France 24 and An-Nahar both say Israeli strikes on the ridge continued under it.

The place. France 24 puts Ali al-Taher about 10 km from the Israeli border. An-Nahar describes a 600-metre hilltop overlooking Nabatieh and the Litani. Israel says Hezbollah built tunnels, a command centre and weapons stores inside it.

Who is involved, and why. - Israel says it is removing a threat to its northern border. - Hezbollah and its parliamentary bloc say they are resisting occupation. - Iran funds and arms Hezbollah. The Jerusalem Post, citing Reuters, says Iran warned the United States last month against an assault on the ridge. - Lebanon's government is negotiating with Israel, with the United States brokering. An-Nahar expects an eighth round of talks in Rome this month.

What is at stake. An-Nahar's columnist argues that if Israel keeps the ridge, it becomes a bargaining chip in the withdrawal talks. If it goes to the Lebanese army, it would test whether the state can take over ground Hezbollah held. If Hezbollah still holds parts of it, the battle continues.

Where it stands. Israel says it controls the ridge. None of our reports carries a statement from Hezbollah. A Hezbollah-bloc MP says the ridge is still being bombed.

What is being argued about

  • Does Israel hold the ridge above ground and below, or is the battle for it still running?
  • Has Hezbollah conceded anything? No report we hold carries a statement from the group itself.
  • How many fighters were under the hill, and how many died there — no report gives a number, and none names one of the dead.
  • Fighters, terrorists or martyrs: three words for the same men, each of them in the reporting voice rather than inside a quotation.

The bias in this coverageBias

One ridge, three words for the men on it

Five reports use three names for the same men: fighters, terrorists, martyrs. Each word sits in the reporting voice, not inside a quotation. No report names one of the dead.

5 reports on the ridge 1 that call them fighters 1 that call them terrorists 1 that call them martyrs

Who is allowed to be uncertain

Three reports carry both an Israeli and a Lebanese account; two carry one side only. The report that clocks the silence at more than twenty hours is also the only one saying observers could neither verify nor refute the Israeli account, and it notes no footage of the capture has been broadcast.

3 reports carrying both an Israeli and a Lebanese account 2 that carry one side only 0 that name a dead person

Claims and verdicts

disputed Israel has operational control of the Ali al-Taher ridge, above ground and below it.
Katz says it to France 24 and the Jerusalem Post and Netanyahu called the battle finished, but France 24 records that Hezbollah did not confirm losing the ridge and An-Nahar that it stayed silent for more than 20 hours. An-Nahar's party-linked sources call the account inaccurate and note that Israeli media has published no image of the hill or its tunnels, while a Loyalty to the Resistance MP tells Shargh the bombing there continues.

misleading Hezbollah has admitted losing the ridge.
An-Nahar's headline says Hezbollah admits evacuating Ali al-Taher, but its body carries no Hezbollah statement — only 'sources connected to the party' describing a planned, gradual withdrawal to reserve positions after more than 20 hours of silence. France 24 records that the group did not confirm losing the highland, and Shargh's MP disputes that Israel holds it.

Israel has seized the strategically placed Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon from Hezbollah fighters, Defence Minister Israel Katz said Friday.
