Kyiv Post says Fedorov blamed Zaluzhny for the dropped election; Censor.NET's headline adds Budanov, its text does not
Former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov says President Zelensky was ready to hold elections, then backed off because of who would run against him. Two Ukrainian outlets report the claim. They agree on Zaluzhny. Only one headline names Budanov. We hold no reply from the president or his office.
The claim. Former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov says he proposed presidential elections to Volodymyr Zelensky. Fedorov says the president was ready at first. Then, Fedorov says, he dropped the idea over who might run. Both reports carry this as Fedorov's account.
Where the accounts differ.
| Kyiv Post | Censor.NET | |
|---|---|---|
| Who Fedorov said put Zelensky off | Zaluzhny | Headline: Zaluzhny and Budanov. Text: Zaluzhny alone |
| What "June" refers to | Elections to be held in June | A proposal made in June, before Fedorov was dismissed |
| Headline quote | "Then You'd Think About Your Monument" | none |
The same interview, other leads. Life.ru, a Russian outlet, ran two reports from the same Ukrainska Pravda interview. One leads with Fedorov's "love" exchange with Elon Musk. The other leads with his illness: "Шанс на выживание 17%". Neither mentions the elections.
What is not settled. - Whether Budanov was part of Fedorov's account. Only one headline says so. No text we hold does. - Whether "June" was the planned election date or the month of the proposal. - What Zelensky or his office says. We hold no response. - Everything here comes from one interview, and we hold only the opening lines of the two Ukrainian reports.
This story is about a claim by a former Ukrainian minister: that President Volodymyr Zelensky considered holding an election during the war and then decided not to.
How it got here. Russia seized Crimea and backed armed separatists in eastern Ukraine in 2014. On 24 February 2022 it launched a full-scale invasion. Ukraine declared martial law that day, and it has been extended ever since. Ukrainian law does not allow national elections under martial law. Zelensky was elected in 2019 for a five-year term. The presidential election due in spring 2024 was therefore not held, and he has stayed in office. His opponents at home and abroad have questioned his mandate since then. Whether and when to hold a wartime vote has been argued over in Ukraine ever since.
The actors. - Volodymyr Zelensky is Ukraine's president and would face any election. - Mykhailo Fedorov was minister of digital transformation from 2019. He later became defence minister, and Censor.NET reports he has since been dismissed. The claim is his. - Valery Zaluzhny was commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces from 2021 until Zelensky replaced him in February 2024. He then became ambassador to the United Kingdom. He is widely seen as a possible challenger, though he has not declared a run. - Kyrylo Budanov made his name as head of Ukraine's military intelligence. He is the second name in one headline.
What is at stake. An election would test Zelensky's mandate while the war goes on. If Fedorov's account holds, the decision not to hold one turned on political rivals, not only on the war. Fedorov's claim is contested by nobody we hold, but it is also backed by nobody else.
Where it stands. Fedorov's account comes from an interview with Ukrainska Pravda. We hold no response from the president's office.
What is being argued about
- Fedorov says Zelensky was ready to hold elections, then backed off
- Kyiv Post and Censor.NET's text name Zaluzhny as the reason; Censor.NET's headline adds Budanov
- The two reports differ on what 'June' refers to
- Russian coverage of the same interview leads with Musk and Fedorov's illness
