LBCI headlines Jumblatt's Oslo post as a warning that "every round of negotiations" lost land; Al-Modon headlines it as advice to "benefit from the Oslo path"
Walid Jumblatt wrote about the Oslo path on X on 2 October. Two Lebanese outlets put opposite readings of the same post in their headlines. Neither text we hold gets past the post's first words.
One post, two headlines. Walid Jumblatt, the former leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, posted on X about the "Oslo path". LBCI ran it as a warning. Al-Modon ran it as advice.
| Outlet | Headline says | Published (UTC) |
|---|---|---|
| Al-Modon | Jumblatt "advises benefiting from the Oslo path" | 11:06 |
| LBCI (two identical copies) | "Every time a round of negotiations took place, some of the land went and its features changed" | 13:42 |
What we can read. LBCI's text quotes Jumblatt's opening as "The Oslo path, as…" and then breaks off. So we hold the post's first three words and no more.
What else Al-Modon leads with. Al-Modon puts President Joseph Aoun first. Aoun says southerners holding on to their land "is the most eloquent reply to all attempts". Jumblatt comes second in the headline.
Count. Two of three headlines read the post as a warning. One reads it as advice. Both of the warning headlines are from LBCI, so this is one outlet against one, not two against one.
What is NOT settled - What the full post says. None of the three reports carries it. - Whether Jumblatt meant Lebanon should copy Oslo, avoid it, or learn from what went wrong. - Whether he named Lebanon's own talks at all. The headlines suggest it, but the text we hold does not show it.
What this is about. A senior Lebanese politician has compared the talk of Lebanon negotiating with Israel to the Oslo process between Israel and the Palestinians. Lebanese outlets disagree on what he meant.
How it got here. Lebanon and Israel have never signed a peace treaty. They have been formally at war since 1948, and the 1949 armistice line still has no agreed border. Israel occupied part of south Lebanon from 1982 until it withdrew in 2000. Hezbollah, the armed Shia movement and political party, grew out of the fight against that occupation. It fought Israel again in 2006, and the war ended under UN Security Council Resolution 1701. On 8 October 2023, the day after the Hamas-led attacks on Israel and the start of the Gaza war, Hezbollah opened fire across the border. That turned into a wider war, and a ceasefire was agreed in November 2024. Joseph Aoun, a former army commander, became president in January 2025. Since then, whether Lebanon should negotiate directly with Israel has been an open question in Beirut.
Why Oslo. The Oslo Accords of 1993 and 1995 set up the Palestinian Authority and divided the West Bank into zones under interim terms. The final-status questions were left for later: borders, Jerusalem, refugees and settlements. They were never settled, and Israeli settlements kept growing. That history is why "Oslo" can be held up as a model and as a warning.
The actors. Jumblatt is the long-standing leader of Lebanon's Druze community. His son now leads his party. President Aoun speaks for the Lebanese state. The south, where the fighting was, is the land in question.
What is at stake. Talks could bring a fixed border and an Israeli withdrawal. They could also lock in terms that Lebanon later regrets. That second risk is what the warning reading of Jumblatt's post is about.
Where it stands. We do not hold the full text of Jumblatt's post, so we cannot say which reading is his.
What is being argued about
- Whether Jumblatt's post holds up Oslo as a model or as a warning for Lebanon
- How LBCI and Al-Modon put opposite readings of the same post in their headlines
- President Aoun's message that southerners holding their land is Lebanon's answer
- What is missing: the full text of the post
