Life.ru's headline calls Ukraine's Operation Carthage suspect a 'mistress'; Espreso TV calls her 'Muse' and lists the charges
An appeals court kept Yelyzaveta Ivakhnenko in custody on 15 September. The same day, Kyiv Post says, parliament removed the Prosecutor General. Two outlets describe the suspect in very different words.
The ruling. The appeals chamber of Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court kept Yelyzaveta Ivakhnenko in custody, with bail of 20 million hryvnias. Espreso TV cites the court's press service. Life.ru gives the same outcome and bail. Only Life.ru says custody runs to 2 November.
What she is called.
| Espreso TV | Life.ru | |
|---|---|---|
| Label | "Muse", in quotes, credited to NABU | "mistress", in the headline, in its own voice |
| Charges | money laundering; criminal organisation | none named |
| Presumed innocent | stated | not stated |
Espreso TV, citing NABU, calls "Muse" only "a person close to" the official known as "Chancellor". No report we hold says what the relationship is.
The dismissal. Kyiv Post says 317 lawmakers voted to dismiss Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, on a motion from President Volodymyr Zelensky. It says he resigned amid the investigation and denies the allegations. It is the only report we hold that links him to the case.
The politics. A second Life.ru report states as fact that Zelensky is "in open conflict" with the anti-corruption bodies. Its only source is former MP Spiridon Kilinkarov. In Life.ru's paraphrase, the "ex-comic" will not tolerate bodies that stop him and his circle stealing.
Not settled. - Whether Kravchenko's exit is tied to the scheme: only Kyiv Post links them. - Who "Chancellor" is: Espreso TV gives his posts, not his name. - What Ivakhnenko says: no report we hold carries her answer.
What this is about. Ukraine's anti-corruption agencies say they found a criminal network inside the Prosecutor General's Office. The case has reached the country's top prosecutor.
How it got here. - 2014–2015. The Maidan protests brought down President Viktor Yanukovych. Russia then seized Crimea, and war began in the east. Ukraine's Western backers made new anti-corruption bodies a condition of their support. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) investigates. The Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) prosecutes. Both were set up in 2015, apart from the ordinary prosecutors and police. - 2019. The High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) began work. Its appeals chamber reviews its rulings. - February 2022. Russia began its full-scale invasion. In June that year Ukraine became a candidate to join the EU. Fighting corruption is one of the conditions for joining. - July 2025. Parliament passed a law that put NABU and SAP under the Prosecutor General. It led to street protests and criticism from the EU. Within days, parliament passed a new bill from President Volodymyr Zelensky that restored their independence. - 4 September 2026. NABU and SAP announced Operation Carthage. Espreso TV reports what the investigators allege. An official in the Prosecutor General's Office, known as "Chancellor", protected fraudulent call centres in exchange for payments. The call centres defrauded Ukrainians and foreigners. More than 30 million hryvnias was laundered, and five people were exposed.
The actors. - NABU and SAP brought the case. - The HACC decides whether suspects are held. - Parliament appoints and dismisses the Prosecutor General, on a motion from the president. - Zelensky submitted the motion. - Russian outlets cover the case as part of their reporting on the war.
What is at stake. The case tests two things. The first is whether Ukraine's anti-corruption bodies can pursue the prosecution service itself. The second is whether Ukraine's leaders will let them. The answer matters for EU membership and for Western aid. The link between the 2025 dispute and this case is disputed. Some Ukrainian commentators draw it. We hold no report that shows it.
Where it stands. On 15 September, suspects remained in custody with bail set. Kyiv Post reports that parliament dismissed Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko the same day. It says he denies the allegations. No one has been convicted.
What is being argued about
- What the custody suspect is called: 'Muse', in quotes, or 'mistress'
- Whether the charges and the presumption of innocence are reported
- Parliament's 317-vote dismissal of Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko
- A former MP's claim that Zelensky is at war with NABU
